The Regional Office for RNE is responsible for leading FAO’s response to regional priorities for Security" id="link" class="link">Food Security, Agriculture and rural development through the identification, planning and implementation of FAO’s priority activities in the region. It ensures a multidisciplinary approach to programmes, identifies priority areas of action for the Organization in the Region and, in collaboration with departments and divisions at Headquarters, develops, promotes and oversees FAO's strategic response to regional priorities. RNE also advises on the incorporation of regional priorities into the Organization’s Programme of Work and Budget and implements approved programmes and projects in the region, monitors the level of programme implementation and draws attention to problems and deficiencies. RNE develops and maintains relations with region-wide institutions including the Regional Economic Integration Organizations (REIOs). The Regional Office supports regional policy dialogue on food security, agriculture and rural development issues, facilitates the emergence of regional partnerships, and supports Capacity Development and resource mobilization for food security, agriculture and rural development in the region.

Reporting Lines

The regional consultant on soil Data Management and Mapping reports to the RNE Senior Forestry Officer, the NSL Land and Water Officer at FAO HQ.

Technical Focus

Supporting the implementation of the TCP RAB 3802 project on capacity development for the sustainable management of soil resources in the NENA region to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Tasks and responsibilities

  • With the support of the soil data management experts at FAO HQ, coordinate the work of the national consultants on soil data management to ensure the timely and satisfactory collection of national data on soil
  • Compile and process data, information, maps and other outputs produced and collected by the National consultants on soil data management in order to get regional figures
  • Collect data on major soil threats (such as soil salinization and sodification, soil erosion, soil fertility and soil organic matter decline), soil properties (such as organic carbon, electrical conductivity, texture, CEC, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, pH, permeability and micronutrients like Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Bo, etc.), and data on drivers of soil threats (climatic, geologic, land use, tidal/marine, irrigation, types and quantities of fertilizer application) in the NENA region as needed.
  • Prepare regional thematic maps, reports and extraction of statistics on regional soil properties and analyse regional trends in soil threats.
  • Prepare a Regional Action Plan based on National Action Plans provided by National Consultants
  • Collect and write up case studies based on the results of the regional assessments for main challenges on soils.
  • Prepare interim reports.
  • (if required) present the outcomes of his/her work at regional workshops to increase the awareness of stakeholders on the status of soils in NENA and the tools available to preserve and sustainably manage them
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree in Soil Science or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in soil data management and mapping
  • Working knowledge of English French and Arabic
