Job Overview:
The Radio Operator role is crucial for the effective communication and Coordination of NRC's operations in the field. This position involves operating and monitoring various Communication Systems, including UHF and HF radio systems, vehicle and personnel tracking systems, CCTV, and satellite telephones. The Radio Operator will be responsible for maintaining constant communication with NRC vehicles and staff, ensuring the safety and Security of personnel, and responding to emergencies as they arise. The role requires proficiency in both English and local languages to facilitate effective communication across diverse teams and situations. The Radio Operator must remain vigilant and attentive during duty shifts, ensuring that all communications are logged accurately and that any potential threats are reported immediately. This position is vital for maintaining operational integrity and safety in a challenging environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Radio Operator will have a range of duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to: monitoring and communicating with NRC vehicles and staff in the field, reporting any potential threats to NRC staff and assets, logging all transmitted and received messages according to established procedures, conducting periodic equipment inspections, and coordinating radio-related actions for locating missing or distressed staff. Specific tasks include operating Motorola VHF, UHF, and Codan HF radio systems, maintaining accurate logs of communications, alerting security personnel of significant events, controlling office keys during off-duty hours, and facilitating transport for staff and visitors. The Radio Operator must also regularly check emails in the Radio Room, conduct thorough handover briefings, monitor EM-NET and TV stations for announcements, draft and distribute SMS alerts, and communicate any issues faced to supervisors. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the line manager as needed.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of 3 years of experience in non-profit or NGO work, particularly within international Humanitarian Assistance programs. A Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Economics, or a related field is required. Advanced knowledge of Communications Technology, including satellite communications and cell phone systems, is essential. Candidates should have a good understanding of the local area and the provinces of Afghanistan, with the ability to read and interpret maps. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to summarize situations accurately under pressure are critical. Candidates must demonstrate honesty, trustworthiness, and strong communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in computer skills, including database knowledge and wireless networking, is necessary, along with troubleshooting skills for electrical, radio, and computer systems.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Business Administration, Economics, or a related discipline. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the operational and administrative aspects of the role, as well as for effective communication and coordination within the organization.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in the non-profit or NGO sector, particularly in roles related to international humanitarian assistance. This experience should demonstrate the candidate's ability to operate effectively in challenging environments and to manage communication systems and protocols.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and verbal. Proficiency in local languages is also required to ensure effective communication with local staff and stakeholders. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not mandatory.
Additional Notes:
This position may require the Radio Operator to work at any time of day or night, including weekends, and at short notice. The role is full-time and may involve significant responsibilities in high-risk environments.
