Job Overview:
The position of Programme Management involves a critical role in researching and analyzing the security track of the peace process in Yemen. The incumbent will be responsible for understanding local power dynamics and mechanisms for cooperation among various stakeholders. This role requires conducting comprehensive desk reviews of relevant case studies and academic literature to inform strategic recommendations. The incumbent will also carry out Field Research as necessary, which includes designing interview tools, organizing field trips, and overseeing Data Collection efforts. The ultimate goal of this position is to draft reports that provide actionable insights and recommendations aimed at promoting ceasefire agreements and strengthening local security efforts in Yemen. The role demands a deep understanding of informal Yemeni structures and the ability to advise on engagement strategies with local actors regarding security and ceasefire issues.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Programme Management position include:
- Developing research related to the security track of the peace process, focusing on local power dynamics and cooperation mechanisms.
- Conducting desk reviews of relevant case studies and academic literature to support research findings.
- Carrying out field research in Yemen and the surrounding region as necessary, which includes designing interview tools and organizing field trips.
- Overseeing data collection processes to ensure accuracy and relevance.
- Drafting various reports that include strategic recommendations for promoting ceasefire and enhancing local security efforts.
- Identifying opportunities and providing recommendations for security arrangements that contribute to long-term sustainability and peace.
- Offering insights into informal Yemeni structures and advising on engagement strategies with local actors concerning security and ceasefire-related issues.
Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for this position include:
- An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in International Relations, Development Studies, or a related field.
- Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in analyzing local governance structures or related areas is essential.
- Demonstrated experience working with UN agencies and conducting field studies in the Middle East is required.
- Previous experience with Mapping conflict dynamics in Yemen is encouraged, although not mandatory.
Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in fields such as International Relations, Development Studies, or other related disciplines. Candidates with a first-level university degree may also qualify if they possess two additional years of relevant experience. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of governance and security in conflict-affected regions.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience, particularly in the analysis of local governance structures or related areas. Candidates should have a proven track record of working with UN agencies and conducting field studies in the Middle East. Experience in mapping conflict dynamics in Yemen is highly desirable, as it will provide valuable insights into the local context and enhance the effectiveness of the role.
Languages:
For this position, proficiency in English and Arabic is required, as these are the primary languages of communication within the UN Secretariat. Additionally, knowledge of French is beneficial, and familiarity with another UN official language is considered an advantage. This multilingual capability is essential for engaging with diverse stakeholders and conducting research effectively in the region.
