Job Description

PD Internship Programme 2021 – Gender Mainstreaming Intern Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (Home Based) The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies, and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking motivated and qualified candidates to fill positions of the 2021 Policy and Programme Department (PD) Internship Programme.

The position will either be based in our Programme Unit of the AAP (Accountability to Affected Population) Team, Gender and Protection, based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, or home-based, depending on the pandemic-caused restrictions. The internship will be typically for the period of at least 3 months during June to August/September 2021.

Brief description of Programme Unit, AAP, Gender and Protection Team:

The AAP, Gender and Protection Team is responsible to coordinate, provide Technical Support and oversee the mainstreaming and implementation of these cross-cutting functions in all programs and activities of WFP Ethiopia Country Office and Sub/Field Offices. The Team also coordinates the engagement of Gender Results Network (GRN) towards the implementation of gender, protection and AAP/CFM policies and action plans and supports implementing partners’ capacity strengthening activities to mainstream gender, protection and CFM in their activities.

Duties and responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Gender Advisor, the candidate will perform the following duties:
  • Provide technical support to the team in the organization and facilitation of Gender Results Network (GRN)/Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) meetings and webinars, preparing the agenda, taking notes, documentation, and follow up the implementation of action points
  • Track and monitor the submission of GRN reports, best practice and information sharing, including updates on the implementation of the GRN action plans and consolidate the reports for corporate reporting requirements (ACR, GAM and annual GRN report)
  • Support the GRN members and PSEA focal persons in the Country Office (CO) and the Sub Offices (SO) in implementing gender, protection and disability inclusion action plans by sharing  relevant resources and updates from CO, Regional Bureau in Nairobi (RBN) and Headquarters (HQ) that could stimulate their learning and development
  • Assist in mainstreaming gender, protection and disability inclusion in all their programs and activities as per the identified gender and protection gaps; in generating gender and age disaggregated reports
  • Contribute to the preparation of advocacy and awareness raising events such as 16 days of activism, collect good practices and stories and sharing with internal Communications Team and RBN
  • Support the team in preparation of training materials and cascading of gender toolkits and protection trainings to the CO/SO and partners staff and documenting training reports
  • Perform a gender and protection Analysis/assessment, reporting and documentations
  • Support the team in researching and collecting good practices in gender mainstreaming and gender transformative activities such as engaging men and boys; document and disseminate these within CO and SOs
  • Work with various teams in preparing gender sensitive indicators in their reporting formats, monitoring checklists, advocacy materials and Social and Behavioral Change Communication (SBCC) and training materials and guidance notes
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications and experience

  • Currently enrolled with in a graduate programme and have attended classes in the past 12 months, or a recent graduate from a graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme). Preferred areas of study are Social Sciences, such as Sociology; Development Studies, Gender Studies, International Development, Community Development or related fields
  • Excellent command of English; Working knowledge of a second UN language would be an asset
  • Strong interest, affinity and experience or knowledge in Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment are desirable
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)

Working Languages

Working knowledge of English (proficiency/level C) is required.

Supervision (Level/Methods of Supervision) Under the direct supervision of the Gender Advisor, the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be elemental part of the supervision. AAP, Gender and Protection Team Leader will be the second-level supervisor. With the support of a comprehensive induction package and assignment of a buddy/mentor, the intern will rapidly become a productive member of the team.

Training components

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, WeLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

Learning Elements

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:
  • Have a greater understanding of the work of WFP
  • Learn by working together with her team members and other sections/Programme Units and Functional areas as gender is cutting across all programs
  • Have a solid understanding of the linkages between Food Insecurity and gender
  • Have a good knowledge of the various mainstreaming tools for integrating gender equality and women’s empowerment in WFP’s work
Information on the Country of Assignment

  • Living conditions in Addis Ababa(city), Ethiopia (Country)
Although there are security challenges due to conflicts in different parts of the country, especially in Tigray and northern part of the country, Addis Ababa and major urban areas of the country are safe. All UN staff travels as per the security advisory from each agency and UNDSS. However, it is good to be always vigilant for foreigners and be aware of the risk of pickpocketing, bag and jewelry snatching including from vehicles stopped at traffic lights in Addis Ababa, especially during times of large crowds common on key national and religious dates. These Large crowds are common on key national and religious dates include Ethiopian Christmas on 7 January, Epiphany/’Timket’ in January, Victory of Adawa on 2 March, Ethiopian Patriots’ Victory Day on 5 May, Ethiopian New Year on 11-12 September and The Finding of the True Cross/’Meskel’ in September. Large crowds also gather on Ethiopian (Orthodox) Easter; Eid Al Fitr; Eid Al Arafa and the Birthday of the Prophet Mohammed. Various parts of the country also have local festivals which can lead to large gatherings and may be good ground for criminal activities.
