The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a National Senior Communications Manager, Science Media Relations . This position can be home-officed.

In this role, you will be responsible for the support and implementation of multi-year strategic communication plans supporting and promoting AHA scientific statements/guidelines/advisories and scientific advances published in AHA’s signature medical journals and presented at AHA meetings/conferences through traditional media, social media and on other AHA owned channels. Responsible for developing appropriate resources to advance understanding and promotion of AHA as a leading science voice and AHA’s impact goal. Produce promotion materials for newsworthy abstracts and manuscripts published in the AHA’s journals or presented at the AHA’s science meetings, as well as other projects as assigned. Responsible for supervision of up to 2 FTE staff members and close collaboration with Director" id="link" class="link">Senior Director in strengthening the Science Media Relations team

Responsibilities

  • Work with Senior Director and Vice President and other teams to develop and implement integrated, strategic communication plans supporting and promoting AHA scientific statements/guidelines/advisories, positions and scientific advances published in AHA’s signature medical journals and presented at AHA meetings/conferences through traditional and novel media channels including social media. Collaborate with internal teams including Science and Medicine, Science Operations, Scientific Publishing, Science Marketing, Social Media Marketing, Health and Science Programs and Enterprise-Wide Mobilization teams, and external collaborators such as the American College of Cardiology and other medical organizations.

  • Supervise up to 2 FTE members of the SMR team in close collaboration with Senior Director.

  • Translate findings from scientific abstracts and manuscripts, published in AHA’s science journals and/or presented at AHA’s scientific meetings, to produce news releases, pitches, multi-media assets and other news materials/activations (e.g., radio spots, virtual satellite media tour, MAT releases, talking points/messaging, op-eds) to promote progress, results, actionable information for the public. Participate in the review and selection of abstracts and manuscripts chosen for promotion.

  • Drive consumer and trade media engagement by implementing strategies that will garner coverage in targeted media outlets and amplify the department’s impact on AHA’s life-saving mission among volunteers, internal stakeholders and external partners. Develops media opportunities and relationships for advancement of AHA’s goals. Monitors and translates science, health and industry news related to assigned initiatives or programs to provide ongoing and innovative news releases/pitches/communications tools to optimize communications reach.

  • Monitor the traditional and social media landscape to ensure AHA can respond appropriately to breaking news related to AHA scientific statements, guidelines and presidential advisories.

  • Lead or support other Communications initiatives as applicable and relevant.

Qualifications

  • Eight (8) years of experience writing, editing and managing news releases, promotion materials including radio spots, talking points/messaging, fact sheets, or other related content

  • Five (5) years of the following experience:

  • Experience reviewing and translating scientific manuscripts and abstracts to news releases for a consumer/public audience

  • Experience supervising staff of at least 2 full-time staff members

  • Experience developing newsworthy ideas and strategic public relations plans that strengthen the AHA’s mission and key messages

  • Proven success with integrated, strategic promotion plans in collaboration with other departments

  • Project Management experience, including managing multiple projects concurrently

  • Demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines, while faced with competing demands and priorities

  • Proficient computer skills including all Microsoft Office programs, especially Word, Teams, PowerPoint and Excel, Zoom, Adobe Acrobat

  • Excellent writing and editing skills; Knowledge of AP Style

  • Experience developing social media messaging

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven success with newsworthy ideas, write and pitch stories to national, tier one consumer media outlets

  • Proven success with integrated, strategic promotion plans in collaboration with other departments

  • APR – accreditation from Public Relations Society of American or similar preferred
