The Detector Technology Group in the Experimental Physics Department participates in the development, construction and operation of particle detectors for experiments at CERN. This comprises detector consolidation and upgrade projects as well as infrastructure for experiments. For the CMS experiment upgrade, the group participates in the Design, construction and maintenance of high-performance mechanics and Cooling Systems.

As a Mechanical Technician -  Precision Mechanics and Cooling Systems (TTE Programme), your functions will be:
  • You will support the various technical activities associated with the construction and testing of the CMS Outer Tracker mechanics and cooling;
  • You will be involved in the manufacture of prototypes and small series of mechanical parts, made of metal, plastic and composite materials, from the design to the part manufacture and integration into mechanical assemblies;
  • You will take part in the operation of the evaporative CO2 cooling system for the detector, supporting the detector team for testing and commissioning activities;
  • You will be involved in the maintenance activities for the CO2 cooling system for the detector, being part of a team of maintenance and operation expert.


In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:
  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (;
  • You have a Technical Diploma (  in the field of mechanics, technology or equivalent, and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
  • If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;
  • If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However, you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme;
  • You should have at least a working knowledge of English or French.

Specific skills required for this job
  • Experience in manufacture of mechanical parts and assemblies;
  • Experience in reading mechanical design drawings and specifications in terms of tolerances;
  • Teamwork – communicating well with others working on the same projects;
  • Interest in mechanics and Manufacturing of mechanical assemblies;
  • Experience in manufacture of pipework, including pipe-joining techniques (welding, brazing) would be an advantage;
  • Experience in maintenance and operation of cooling system would be an advantage;
  • Experience in using CAD systems such as CATIA would be an advantage.

  • An employment contract of one year, renewable for a second year;

  • A monthly stipend of 4585 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);

  • Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;
