Strategic office context: UNICEF’s current objectives for the Division of Private Fundraising and Partnerships (PFP) are to: 1) Mobilize Resources from the Private Sector: this includes raising funds from individuals, corporations and foundations. Within resource mobilization, the current emphasis is on balancing acquisition of new donors with retention of current donors, acquiring more donors digitally, and diversifying our income streams including regular donations, cash donations, major donors and legacies.

2) Engage with the Private Sector: this includes engaging with individuals and corporations to garner their support for children. Working with corporations, and in addition to resource mobilization, UNICEF will capitalize on the corporate experience and competence in relevant areas such as Digital Transformation, communication, transportation, education, health care, in addition to ensuring that corporations respect Child Rights in all their practices. Working with individuals, we will engage the public in financial and non-financial ways to support children causes through donations, volunteer work, advocacy, and acting as influencers.

Market Research Manager Contribution:

The Market Knowledge Unit (MKU) is responsible for bringing external perspectives about the world, the development and humanitarian sector, and audiences to UNICEF, to ensure that our decisions are externally sensitive, and evidence based. We do this by designing and interpreting public opinion surveys, conducting market Analysis, tracking trends and identifying audience insights. MKU turns data into insights, connects the dots across different areas of knowledge, identifies best practices for reapplication, and provides the tools to turn the knowledge into action and results for children.

The Market Research Manager ensures that UNICEF’s relationship with its audiences is at the highest possible level and that our communication and branding efforts contribute to such an objective. This includes designing, conducting, and interpreting public opinion surveys among different audiences to understand their values, motivations and behavior in order to enable UNICEF to communicate with them in relevant and persuasive ways. The Market Research Manager will make evidence-based recommendations identifying opportunities and addressing challenges to help UNICEF achieve its objectives.

The Market Research Manager will work collaboratively with internal stakeholders in the Headquarters, Regional Support Centers, Country Offices and National Committees.

In addition to designing, conducting and interpreting highest quality research, the Market Research Manager will distill the knowledge generated and communicate it in clear ways that result in a direct business impact.

Purpose of the Job:

Overall, the purpose of the position is to help increase UNICEF fundraising revenues and private sector engagement by designing, conducting and interpreting market research surveys and making recommendations to PFP (especially top management and Country Relationship Teams), National Committees, Regional Offices and Country Offices.

The Market Research Manager, under the overall guidance and direction of the Chief Market Research is accountable for managing market research projects, playing a key role in the formulation of UNICEF and PFP strategies, in addition to sub-strategies including the fundraising strategy, digital strategy, communication and advocacy strategy, and brand strategy.

S/he is responsible for establishing research plans and overseeing work progress to ensure the achievement of concrete and sustainable results according to plans, allocations, results based-management approaches and methodology and UNICEF’s Strategic Plans, standards of performance and accountability framework.

S/he holds shared responsibility for strategic recommendations and decisions on situation analysis, programme/project planning, implementation and evaluation as well as administrative decision making on use of funds and Human Resources that have significant impact on projects.

Summary of key functions/accountabilities: 1. Managing consumer research

  • Align on priorities with the Chief Market Knowledge and set direction of opinion surveys.
  • Provide overall policy guidance and direction and coordinate activities. Provide consultation on problem areas and operational issues.
  • Monitor work progress and ensure results are achieved according to schedule and performance standards.
  • Agree clear and achievable work objectives for each supervisee, monitor performance, and ensure appropriate development and training of staff.  Provide support and guidance to staff, and leadership to foster and maintain staff engagement and motivation as well as sound staff-management relations.
2. Understanding business needs and translating them into testable hypotheses.

  • Meet with relevant stakeholders to define the business needs.
  • Establish realistic briefs provided for new research projects that meet business needs.
3. Designing market research plans.

  • Ensure new research project results are actionable and address business issues.
  • Ensure high quality execution of research studies.
  • Provide business partners with relevant high-quality research recommendations.
  • Direct audience contact to identify needs and wants.
  • Stay up to date with latest developments in consumer and market research methodologies and technologies and bring into UNICEF.
4.  Analyzing and presenting consumer and market research findings

  • Conduct training disseminate knowledge & insights and provide guidance to business partners on the use of opinion surveys. Business partners are fundraising, communication, brand and campaign specialists in PFP, HQs, National Committees, Regional Offices and Country Offices.
  • Make recommendations based on opinion surveys and trends tracking.
  • Provide guidance on sensitive and specialized issues, and on global and strategic issues.

Education:

  • An advanced university degree in social sciences, communication or equivalent technical field is required.
  • Alternatively, a first level university degree in a relevant field combined with 10 years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Specialization or course work in quantitative / qualitative research, marketing, statistics or psychology is an asset.
Experience:

  • Minimum of eight years of professional work experience at the international level in market research including multi-country opinion survey project management is required.
  • Knowledge and experience of various global markets as well as consumer products and brand research are required.
  • At least three years’ experience of people management is required.
Language requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN languages consider an asset.
