Job Overview:
The position of Translator within the Language Services Unit of the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) is crucial for ensuring accurate and timely Translation of documents that are essential for the Court's operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for translating and self-revising documents from English into French, covering a broad spectrum of topics including legal, military, medical, forensic, human rights, administrative, and financial matters. This role requires a high level of proficiency in both languages and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining strict confidentiality. The incumbent will also contribute to the development of terminology and reference databases, proofread colleagues' work, and may be tasked with transcribing audio-visual material in French or performing IT-related tasks as needed. The position demands a commitment to quality and accuracy, as well as the ability to adapt to evolving priorities and deadlines.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Translator include: translating and self-revising a variety of documents from English to French; proofreading and cross-reading translations done by colleagues; contributing to the creation and maintenance of terminology and reference databases; transcribing audio-visual materials in French; performing IT-related tasks as required; ensuring that all translations adhere to the highest standards of accuracy and style; collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary and multicultural team; maintaining confidentiality regarding sensitive information; and demonstrating flexibility in managing evolving tasks and priorities under pressure.

Required Qualifications:
The essential qualifications for this position include: an advanced university degree in translation, interpretation, linguistics, law, or a related field; or a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience. A minimum of 5 years of work experience in translation, interpretation, or linguistics is required, with 7 years being necessary if only a first-level university degree is held. Experience in an international organization is preferred, and specialization in legal, military, medical, forensic, human rights, administrative, or financial matters is considered an asset. Candidates must demonstrate excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and style, as well as proficiency in relevant Computer Software such as Microsoft 365, Records Manager, Relativity One, CAT tools, and machine translation.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in translation, interpretation, linguistics, law, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience is acceptable in lieu of the advanced degree. This educational background ensures that the candidate has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for high-quality translation work.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in translation, interpretation, or linguistics. If the candidate holds only a first-level university degree, a total of 7 years of experience is necessary. Experience in an international organization is highly desirable, as it provides familiarity with the specific contexts and terminologies used in international law and human rights.

Languages:
Mandatory languages for this position include mother-tongue proficiency in French and high-level proficiency in English. Knowledge of another official language of the Court, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an asset. Additionally, familiarity with situation-related languages such as Burmese, Dari, Ukrainian, or Hebrew may also be beneficial.

The position is classified as an established post with a minimum net annual salary of €91,36
  • The initial contract duration is for two years, with the possibility of extension, and includes a six-month probationary period.
