Job Overview:
The Internship Position at UNCTAD is designed to provide students or recent graduates with practical experience in the workings of the United Nations. Interns are expected to work full-time, five days a week, for the duration of the internship, which runs from January 13, 2025, to April 18, 202
- The internship is primarily focused on the International Investment Agreements (IIAs) Section of the Division on Investment and Enterprise (DIAE). Interns will engage in various tasks that include research, assisting in the organization of intergovernmental meetings, and providing technical assistance. The role is intended to enhance the Intern's educational experience while contributing to the UN's mission of supporting developing countries.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
- Conducting research on bilateral investment treaties (BITs) and treaties with investment provisions (TIPs), including Data Collection for the G20 reporting and updating the IIA database.
- Analyzing investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS) cases and updating the ISDS database.
- Monitoring national and international investment policy trends and developments, contributing to reports such as the World Investment Report.
- Assisting in the organization and preparation of intergovernmental meetings, including expert meetings and conferences.
- Conducting background research for technical assistance projects and capacity-building activities.
- Proofreading and editing publications, updating the Investment Policy Hub website, and managing Social Media communications.
- Observing and adhering to UN rules and regulations, ensuring confidentiality and impartiality in all tasks.
Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Additionally, candidates should be computer literate in standard Software Applications, demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, and possess the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Educational Background:
Candidates must be enrolled in or have completed a relevant academic program, either at the graduate level or the final year of an undergraduate program. Fields of study closely related to International Relations, economics, trade, or development are preferred, as they align with the internship's focus on investment agreements and International Trade.
Experience:
No prior work experience is required for this internship. However, any relevant training, coursework, or skills that can benefit the United Nations during the internship will be considered advantageous. The internship is primarily aimed at students or recent graduates looking to gain practical experience in a UN setting.
Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language (French, Spanish, Arabic, or Russian) is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's profile and ability to engage in a multilingual environment.

This internship is unpaid, and all costs related to travel, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern. Interns are expected to work full-time and may need to secure a visa if they are not citizens or permanent residents of Switzerland. The UN does not charge any fees during the recruitment process, and candidates should be aware that there is no expectation of employment following the internship. Interns are also not eligible to apply for professional-level positions within the UN for six months after completing their internship.
