Org. Setting and Reporting
The internships are located in the Russian Interpretation Booth, Interpretation Service, Division of Conference Management, United Nations Office at Geneva. The interns report to the Chief of the Section/Service or the internship supervisor, as appropriate.
The internships are proposed from 1 July to 31 August 2019 and may be extended up to a maximum period of 6 months.
Internships are UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Within delegated authority, the intern:
– Carries out assignments as designated by trainers, including silent booth assignments and sight interpretation;
– Advances preparation for assignments using glossaries, UN reference documents and oral presentations to support oral skills;
– Participates in periodical evaluation sessions aimed at assessing his/her progress, addressing strengths and remedying shortcomings, as appropriate;
– Performs other related duties as required, including terminological work, and other tasks.
Speaks and writes clearly and effectively. Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately. Asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication. Tailors language, tone, style and format to match the audience. Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals. Solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others. Places team agenda before personal agenda. Supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position. Shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for Team short comings.
PLANNING & ORGANIZING:
Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies. Identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required. Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work. Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning. Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary. Uses time efficiently.
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
– Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
– Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
– Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, much commence the internship within a one year period of graduation from an academic programme.
Applicants who are unable to commence the internship within one year of graduation shall not be accepted.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For these internships, a perfect command of Russian, normally expected to be the candidate’s main language. Candidates must also possess an excellent command of English or French, as required.

United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. The term “sexual harassment” means any unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature that might reasonably be expected or be perceived to cause offence or humiliation, when such conduct interferes with work, is made a condition of employment or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment, and when the gravity of the conduct warrants the termination of the perpetrator’s working relationship. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
