Job Overview:
This Internship opportunity is situated within the Directorate of Connectivity and Secure Communications at the European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications (ECSAT) in Harwell, UK. The intern will work closely with the Head of the Space for 5G/6G Strategic Programme Line, contributing to the development and implementation of strategies aimed at integrating satellite telecommunications with terrestrial 5G/6G networks. The role is pivotal in supporting the space industry’s transition into the 5G era and beyond, focusing on the development of technologies and services that enhance global connectivity. The intern will engage in research, standardization activities, and collaboration with industry stakeholders, gaining hands-on experience in cutting-edge telecommunications technologies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
- Contributing to research and standardization activities related to 5G and 6G, analyzing their implications for satellite telecommunications.
- Collaborating with application and service providers to optimize their solutions for converged terrestrial and satellite 5G networks.
- Developing virtual reality solutions to demonstrate their applications in hybrid 5G/6G and satellite systems.
- Providing Technical Support for demonstrations and testing within the 5G/6G Hub.
- Assisting in XR demonstrations and tests in the 5G/6G Hub.
- Utilizing AI methods to optimize resource utilization and enhance user experience in XR 5G/6G applications.
- Preparing a report and final presentation summarizing findings and recommendations related to the internship topics.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be university students, preferably in their final or second-to-last year of a Master’s level course. They should demonstrate good interpersonal skills, proactiveness, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. A background in telecommunications, Computer Science, or related fields is essential, with a focus on AI and Machine Learning considered advantageous. Knowledge of telecommunication networks architecture and satellite telecommunications solutions is also beneficial.
Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should be pursuing a degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with a specialization in telecommunications, AI, or machine learning. Candidates must remain enrolled at their university for the entire duration of the internship, ensuring they can apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting.
Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandatory, familiarity with telecommunications networks, satellite communications, and emerging technologies such as AI and machine learning will be advantageous. The internship is designed to provide practical experience, making it suitable for students looking to enhance their understanding of the telecommunications sector.
Languages:
The working languages of the European Space Agency are English and French. A good command of English is required, while knowledge of French or another language from a Member State is considered an asset. This multilingual environment encourages collaboration and communication across diverse teams.
