Job Overview:
The Internship-position" id="link" class="link">Internship Position is located at the ESA Centre for Earth Observation (ESRIN) in Frascati, Italy, specifically within the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. The Φ-lab at ESRIN is tasked with accelerating the future of Earth Observation (EO) through transformational innovations that can reshape industries via new technologies. The intern will support the Φ-lab Explore Office, which focuses on utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to maximize the extraction of information from extensive EO datasets. The internship aims to promote the use of innovative technologies for climate adaptation and mitigation, contributing to a Sustainable future.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including assessing promising transformative technologies within the deep tech innovation sectors, conducting research and study activities, prototyping and testing transformative technologies, and connecting with the EO ecosystem and internal ESA stakeholders to promote the uptake of innovations. Specific tasks include collecting and verifying EO datasets to showcase use cases focused on climate adaptation and mitigation, assessing needs derived from applicable policies and ESA strategic documents, evaluating currently available tools and methodologies in the field of EO data, identifying gaps, proposing alternative approaches, generating narratives of achieved results for ESA and policymakers, and preparing a final report detailing the main results of the internship activities.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be university students, preferably in their final or second-to-last year of a Master's level course. They must remain enrolled at their university for the entire duration of the internship. A good knowledge of English or French is required, and knowledge of another Member State language is considered an asset. Additionally, familiarity with Artificial Intelligence techniques is advantageous.
Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to be enrolled in a university program, ideally pursuing a Master's degree. The educational background should be relevant to the fields of Earth observation, environmental science, Data Science, or related disciplines, ensuring that the intern has the necessary theoretical knowledge to contribute effectively to the tasks assigned.
Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandated, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in Earth observation and sustainability. Experience in research, data Analysis, or technology development, particularly in relation to AI and environmental applications, would be beneficial and enhance the candidate's suitability for the internship.
Languages:
The mandatory language for this position is English or French, with a good command of one being essential. Knowledge of additional languages from ESA member states is considered a valuable asset, as it can facilitate communication within the diverse workforce of the agency.
