Job Overview:
The Internship opportunity is situated within the Directorate of Connectivity and Secure Communications at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands. This role is pivotal in addressing the pressing challenges Europe faces, such as humanitarian crises and Natural Disasters. The Civil Security from Space Programme (CSS) aims to enhance crisis response efforts through integrated space systems and tools. The intern will engage in projects that leverage space-based solutions to facilitate swift responses to emergencies, thereby contributing to the Safety and Security of European citizens. The position requires a proactive individual who can collaborate with various stakeholders to develop innovative concepts and projects that address identified needs in civil security and crisis response.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for several key tasks, including:
- Conducting user needs assessments by reviewing a wide range of priority civil security and crisis response use cases, such as maritime safety, floods, wildfires, and Law enforcement, in consultation with international organizations and stakeholders.
- Assessing the state of the art in Earth Observation (EO), Satellite Communications (Satcom), and Navigation systems, identifying necessary adaptations to meet user needs, and leveraging advanced technologies like AI and cloud solutions.
- Supporting the initiation of new projects and initiatives aligned with system and technology roadmaps.
- Building and maintaining a portfolio of project opportunities, coordinating follow-ups, and playing a significant role in bringing these projects to fruition. The intern will also be expected to demonstrate behavioral competencies such as result orientation, operational efficiency, and fostering cooperation.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be university students, preferably in their final or second-to-last year of a Master's level course. They should remain enrolled at their university for the entire duration of the internship. A good knowledge of English is required, and familiarity with French is advantageous. Knowledge of satellite communication, Earth observation, navigation systems, and AI technologies is considered an asset. Additionally, candidates should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrating the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to be enrolled in a university program, ideally pursuing a Master's degree. The educational background should be relevant to the fields of space technology, engineering, or related disciplines that align with the responsibilities of the internship.
Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandated, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in space technologies and crisis response initiatives. Any relevant internships, projects, or coursework that showcases the candidate's ability to engage with complex systems and technologies will be beneficial.
Languages:
The mandatory language for this position is English, with a good proficiency required. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, and familiarity with another language from an ESA member state is considered an asset.
