The Office of the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the Secretariat department responsible for strengthening International Human Rights mechanisms; enhancing equality and countering discrimination; combating impunity and strengthening accountability and the rule of law; integrating human rights in development and in the economic sphere; widening the democratic space; and early warning and protection of human rights in situations of conflict, violence and insecurity.
This announcement broadcasts international internship assignments with the National Institutions and Regional Mechanisms Section (NIRMS). National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) perform core protection issues, such as the prevention of torture and degrading treatment, summary executions, arbitrary detention and disappearances, or the protection of human rights defenders and have an equally important role in advancing all aspects of the rule of law, including with regard to the judiciary, law enforcement agencies and the correctional system. In addition, National Human Rights Institutions contribute to effective Parliaments (ideally with a Human Rights body), strong and dynamic Civil Society Organizations, alert and responsive media, school systems with human rights education programmes at all levels and, generally, a society encouraging the objective of a universal culture of human rights. Located within the Field Operations and Technical Cooperation Division (FOTCD), the National Institutions and Regional Mechanisms Section works closely with and supports the establishment and strengthening of National Human Rights Institutions and Regional Human Rights Mechanisms with an aim of supporting in the implementation of their broad mandates to promote and protect human rights.

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, under the overall guidance of the Chief of Section, the intern reports to the Human Rights Officer in the work unit. This assignment may be offered for an initial period of three (3) months, renewable for a combined period of six (6) months, upon further approval by the supervisor.

This internship is an UNPAID and full-time engagement that provides a framework through which students from diverse academic backgrounds gain exposure to the work of the United Nations by way of their service within Secretariat entities. The intern shall support OHCHR in fulfilling its mission: to work for the protection of all human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented.
Daily responsibilities of National Institutions and Regional Mechanisms human rights intern will depend on the individual's background and as set out in the High Commissioner's priority work aims and objectives, duties may include but are not limited to assist in facilitating the mainstreaming of the work on National Human Rights Institutions and, in particular, the intern may: support functions related to the Global Alliance of National Human Rights (GANHRI) and its Sub-Committee on Accreditation web-page; assist in research regarding National Human Rights Institutions functions and practices; support the organization and implementation of seminars, workshops and/or training activities on National Human Rights Institutions at the national, regional or global levels, as directed; assist in the preparation of training and information materials concerning National Human Rights Institutions. In addition to the specific responsibilities outlined above, the intern shall support a variety of initiatives aimed at further strengthening the relationship between OHCHR, National Human Rights Institutions and Regional Mechanisms; provide assistance throughout the sessions of the Human Rights Council (HRC) and its mechanisms and mandates (i.e. Universal Periodic Review); assist in implementing the Section's work plan throughout the internship; and perform other tasks as directed by the Chief of Section or supervisor, as appropriate

To qualify for the United Nations Secretariat internship programme, applicants must, at the time of submission, be a graduate or enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master’s degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or, be a graduate or enrolled in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree) preferably in the area of law, political science, international relations, social sciences or a related field, OR have graduated with a university degree as defined above AND, if selected, must commence the internship on the date specified in the Acceptance letter.

WORKING HOURS: Interns must adhere to the established weekly working hours of the duty station where the assignment is located. Working hours shall not exceed 5 days per week (40 hours), including one hour lunch break.
United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates will not be considered for employment with the United Nations if they have committed violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, or sexual harassment, or if there are reasonable grounds to believe that they have been involved in the commission of any of these acts. The term “sexual exploitation” means any actual or attempted abuse of a position of vulnerability, differential power, or trust, for sexual purposes, including, but not limited to, profiting monetarily, socially or politically from the sexual exploitation of another. The term “sexual abuse” means the actual or threatened physical intrusion of a sexual nature, whether by force or under unequal or coercive conditions. The term “sexual harassment” means any unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature that might reasonably be expected or be perceived to cause offence or humiliation, when such conduct interferes with work, is made a condition of employment or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment, and when the gravity of the conduct warrants the termination of the perpetrator’s working relationship.
