Job Description

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The internship is with the Sustainable Tourism and Textile Value Chain teams at UNEP, Economy Division, Paris, France.

It is to start on 5 April 2021 and is for a duration of six months. Please do not apply if you are not available for the whole duration of the internship, at the set time and date.

The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work 35 hours five days per week.

In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Officers, the intern will assist with the development of the communication and research activities of the Textile and Sustainable Tourism Programme projects. Daily responsibilities may vary depending on the individual’s background as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to •Conduct desktop research and strategic analyses to support the engagement strategies of private sector actors and key stakeholders •Support data collection processes from engaged businesses, ensuring technical quality, and conducting preliminary Analysis •Support monitoring activities and the preparation of reports •Support the development of tourism case studies and capacity building surveys •Assist in the development of presentations, newsletters and communication materials for advocating and promoting sustainable tourism and sustainability in textiles in international events, meetings or conferences •Support the project website update and the knowledge management database of the related projects The intern will support the implementation of the following projects: ‘Transforming Tourism Value Chains in Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to accelerate more resilient, resource efficient, low carbon development’ The overarching goal of this project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase resource efficiency in three tourism value chains: food and beverages, accommodation, and, collectively, in meetings, incentives, conferences and events (known as MICE). The project analyses the respective value chains, prepare policy recommendations, and develop concrete action plans that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve resource efficiency in at least 100 business along the value chain. In addition, partners in the project will develop a monitoring and reporting system that will enable countries (Philippines, Dominican Republic, Mauritius, and Saint Lucia) to account for their achievements under international agreements.

Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI) The Global Tourism Plastics Initiative unites the tourism sector behind a common vision to address the root causes of plastic pollution. It enables businesses, governments, and other tourism stakeholders to take concerted action, leading by example in the shift towards circularity in the use of plastics. Developed by the Sustainable Tourism Programme of the One Planet network, a multi-stakeholder partnership to implement SDG 12 on Sustainable Consumption and Production, the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative is led by the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Tourism Organisation, in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

Sustainability and circularity in the textile value chain UNEP aims to provide knowledge and leadership by convening partners with the aim to make the textile value chain more circular and sustainable. In 2020, UNEP published a report Mapping the global textile value chain and identifying priority actions. Currently, UNEP is developing a roadmap report further detailing the actions required, stakeholder groups to be involved, timelines and indicators. The roadmap is developed in a consultative process, including an online workshop in 2021. Further, UNEP regularly exchanges with a community of experts, including through ad-hoc bilateral calls and a monthly newsletter. UNEP is applying this global knowledge in a project targeting businesses and governments with a focus on sustainable business models in three countries in Africa.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree.

Be computer literate in standard Software Applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.

NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.
