Job Overview:
The Internship program at the American Heart Association offers college students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the non-profit sector, specifically within the health and wellness domain. Interns will work closely with the Development Team to foster a sustainable culture of health in diverse and vulnerable communities, particularly in the Huntsville, AL market. This role is designed to provide practical experience in various areas, including volunteer management, community event planning, and program development. Interns will engage in meaningful work that not only enhances their professional skills but also contributes positively to the community. The internship is structured to allow individuals to explore potential career paths within a reputable health organization while making a tangible impact on Public Health.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks that support the Development Team's initiatives. Key responsibilities include collaborating with Event Coordinators and Development Directors to assist in event planning and execution. Interns will help with pre-event planning, manage projects related to events, and work alongside volunteers to support committees focused on core campaigns. They will also engage in donor stewardship, assist with Serve Day actions, and communicate with external vendors regarding event Logistics. Additionally, interns will utilize event support systems such as Luminate and Event.Gives, develop promotional materials for events, and contribute to social media planning for core and serve events during the centennial celebrations. Advocacy efforts and volunteer recruitment on campus, as well as support for health fairs, will also be part of their responsibilities.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates for this internship should possess effective oral, written, and presentation communication skills. They must demonstrate the ability to work professionally in both corporate and non-profit environments and be comfortable making cold calls to donors and potential supporters. Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs is essential, along with strong leadership experience and the ability to communicate effectively with community leaders, volunteers, and staff. Interns should be capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and have a reliable means of transportation for local travel. A minimum availability of 20 hours per week during standard business hours is required, and candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Educational Background:
The internship is open to college students who are pursuing a degree in a relevant field such as public health, communications, Event Management, or a related discipline. Candidates should be in good academic standing and demonstrate a commitment to community service and health advocacy.
Experience:
While prior experience in event planning or non-profit work is beneficial, it is not mandatory. The internship is designed for students who are eager to learn and gain practical experience in the Health Sector. A strong interest in community health and volunteerism is essential.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Additional language skills may be considered an asset, particularly if they align with the communities served by the AHA.

This internship is a part-time position requiring a commitment of 20-25 hours per week. The internship duration is from January 21, 2025, to May 2, 2025, and it is a remote position based in Augusta, Georgia. Compensation for the internship is set at $23.00 per hour.
