Job Overview:
The Internship-position" id="link" class="link">Internship Position at the Detention Center of the ICC offers a unique opportunity to engage with the workings of international Criminal Justice. Interns will support the Chief Custody Officer (CCO) and the Detention Section, which is responsible for ensuring safe, secure, and humane conditions for detainees awaiting trial or appeal. The role involves conducting legal research, managing documentation, and liaising with various stakeholders, including the International Committee of the Red Cross. Interns will gain hands-on experience in the Administration of the Detention Centre and contribute to the Court's mission of upholding the rights of detainees while supporting the legal processes involved in their cases.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns in the Detention Section will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, including: conducting legal research on matters related to the Detention Section's mandate; providing support to relevant sections of the Division/Registry on related projects; following cases before the Court that pertain to the Detention Section; summarizing important filings and providing in-depth analyses of relevant decisions; assisting in drafting correspondence and memoranda on behalf of the CCO; managing the Detention Section’s databases; and providing administrative assistance on other tasks as assigned by the CCO. Access to the Court’s library and legal databases will be provided to facilitate these duties.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a degree or be in the final stages of their studies in law, International Relations, or a related field. A strong academic record is essential. While practical experience is not a prerequisite, any relevant experience may be considered an asset, provided it does not exceed three years. Candidates should demonstrate a service-oriented attitude, a genuine interest in International Law, particularly international Criminal Law, and possess strong teamwork and communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is also required.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have a degree or be nearing completion of their studies in law, international relations, or a relevant field from a recognized university. A strong academic performance is expected, reflecting the candidate's commitment and capability in the field of study.

Experience:
The internship is designed for candidates in the early stages of their professional careers. While prior practical experience is not mandatory, any relevant experience that aligns with the Court's work may be beneficial. However, such experience should not exceed three years, allowing for a focus on candidates who are primarily in their academic or early career stages.

Languages:
Proficiency in either French or English, the working languages of the Court, is mandatory. Knowledge of an additional official language of the Court, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage in a multilingual environment.

Additional Notes:
The internship is a full-time position with a contract duration of between three to six months, to be agreed upon prior to commencement. The ICC does not provide remuneration or reimbursement for expenses incurred during the internship, so applicants must be able to support themselves financially throughout the duration of their placement. The Court encourages applications from individuals of diverse backgrounds and aims to improve geographical representation among its staff, particularly from non-represented and under-represented countries.
