Job Overview:
The position of Individual Specialist for Media and Information Literacy is situated within the Communication and Information Sector of UNESCO. The primary function of this role is to support the drafting of guidelines that advance UNESCO's intersectoral efforts to empower citizens with essential knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary for the ethical use of new digital technologies. The incumbent will work under the overall authority of the Head of Unit a.i. for Media and Information Literacy and Digital Competencies. The role emphasizes the importance of critical thinking skills in navigating the online information ecosystem and aims to provide practical guidance on implementing various aspects of UNESCO's work in this area. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of media and information literacy and its integration into both formal and informal education systems, as well as the ability to produce accessible communication materials for diverse audiences.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Individual Specialist include:
- Conducting a thorough review to identify and define the cross-cutting aspects of UNESCO’s work related to empowering citizens with critical thinking skills for using new digital technologies and navigating the online information ecosystem. This involves analyzing previous publications, ongoing projects, and activities.
- Developing practical guidance and examples of approaches to realize intersectoral synergies in implementing UNESCO’s work, particularly focusing on the Intersectoral Programme 4: 'Media and Information Literacy and Digital Competencies.'
- Integrating feedback from UNESCO teams and independent experts to ensure that the guidelines meet current scientific and UNESCO standards.
- Preparing a comprehensive concept note outlining the table of contents for the guidelines by December 6, 2024, and subsequent drafts of the guidelines by specified deadlines.
- Ensuring all deliverables are prepared in English and are accessible to non-native speakers.
Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for this position include an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Journalism, political sciences, management, or related fields within social and human sciences. Candidates must possess at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in communication and information, particularly in Media and Information Literacy. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate advanced knowledge of media and information literacy, its relation to online freedom of expression, and the integration of these concepts into educational frameworks. Strong analytical and drafting skills, the ability to work under pressure, and proficiency in multicultural team environments are also essential.
Educational Background:
Candidates must hold an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in relevant fields such as journalism, political sciences, management, or social and human sciences. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of communication and information in the context of UNESCO's mission.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in the fields of communication and information, with a specific focus on Media and Information Literacy. This experience should include working on projects that promote critical thinking and the ethical use of digital technologies, as well as familiarity with UNESCO's work and mandate.
Languages:
Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of other official languages of UNESCO, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, French, or Spanish, is considered desirable and would enhance a candidate's profile.
Additional Notes:
The selected candidate will work remotely, and travel to Paris is not required for this assignment. However, if travel becomes necessary during the contract period, UNESCO will reimburse the Individual Specialist according to its travel provisions. The contract duration is estimated to be 4 months, from November 26, 2024, to March 25, 202
