Job Overview:
The Human Resources Director (HR Director) position at the American Heart Association is a pivotal role that serves as a business partner and Advisor to leaders and employees within the Midwest region. This position is responsible for developing and implementing human resources strategies that align with the Association's goals. The HR Director will lead various HR programs and regional learning and development activities, including leadership development and virtual training sessions. The role is designed to support employees throughout their lifecycle, from onboarding to departure, ensuring a positive employee experience. The HR Director will utilize HR metrics and data to provide insights for continuous improvement in organizational culture and leadership practices. This position can be home-based anywhere within the 13-state Midwest region, which includes states such as Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, among others.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The HR Director will be responsible for a variety of duties, including:
  • Providing support to employees throughout their lifecycle, including conducting check-in calls and assisting with Development Plans.
  • Advising employees and managers on HR programs and procedures, covering areas such as onboarding, employee relations, engagement, organizational development, and talent succession.
  • Utilizing HR metrics and data to provide insights and recommendations for improving culture and leadership.
  • Identifying barriers to performance and implementing coaching and Development Strategies to enhance employee and manager performance.
  • Creating and facilitating virtual leadership and individual contributor training sessions.
  • Leading region-wide HR projects and programs, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, including New Staff Orientation and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.
  • Participating in cross-functional projects and maintaining strong partnerships with other HR functions such as Talent Acquisition and Learning and Development.
  • Performing other duties as assigned within the HR functional area.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the HR Director position should possess the following qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required.
  • Professional certifications such as SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP or SPHR/PHR are preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of proven experience in human resources.
  • At least two years of experience in providing employee and leadership coaching.
  • Training facilitation experience is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to relate to and influence individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • A solid understanding of employment laws and compliance with internal policies and procedures.
  • Exceptional skills in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks and projects, particularly under competing demands. 1
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% for local and overnight assignments.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for the HR Director position includes a Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field. Equivalent experience may also be considered. Professional certifications such as SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP or SPHR/PHR are highly desirable and can enhance a candidate's qualifications for this role.
