Results for Development (R4D) seeks an Executive Director to lead EdTech Hub, of which R4D is one of the core partners.

Our Work

EdTech Hub is a global non-profit research partnership. Our goal is to empower people by giving them the evidence they need to make decisions about technology in education.

Technology has the potential to help address the global learning crisis. But that potential is not being realised. Policymakers and other decision-makers face an overwhelming choice of technology solutions, are unclear on what works and what doesn’t, and are forced to make decisions based on low or no evidence.

At EdTech Hub, we commission and undertake rigorous academic research and give evidence-based advice about how to use technology in education. With our help, decision-makers inside and outside of government can make clear, evidence-based policy decisions to achieve maximum impact.

We are focused on the use of education technology in low- and middle-income countries. While we support dozens of countries globally, the six focus countries where the majority of our work will be carried out are: Bangladesh, Ghana, Kenya, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania.

EdTech Hub is initially an eight-year, 24 million GBP programme supported by FCDO, the World Bank, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Hub is a consortium comprised of six core partner organisations; they lead work in three areas: research, innovation, and engagement. Six directors lead these areas of work. This role is an exciting opportunity to lead an ambitious global programme that is accelerating progress toward ending the global learning crisis. The Executive Director will lead a diverse team of experts to execute on the vision for the Hub, drawing on the Hub’s deep education, research, policy engagement, and technology expertise. The Executive Director will provide thought leadership, advice, and direction to the global education sector, and mobilise other Hub leaders to do the same—all with the aim of advancing the reach and impact of the Hub’s work. The Executive Director will leverage the Hub’s advisers and partners to maximise the Hub’s influence. This role is one fit for a seasoned leader who will create a culture of collaboration, high performance, and high-quality delivery in service of the world’s most marginalised children, teachers, and systems.

The Executive Director will report to the Executive Committee and lead the Hub, independent from any one institution or workstream. The six directors of the EdTech Hub and the Head of Operations report to the Executive Director. The Executive Director provides leadership, mentoring, and management to ensure a culture of collaboration that leads to high performance in the Design, delivery, and promotion of the Hub’s activities.


1.) Strategic leadership of EdTech Hub
  • Lead the Hub to deliver on the Hub strategy and associated objectives, refining the strategy and direction overtime in consultation with the Executive Committee and the Core Delivery Team.
  • Ensure coherence and deep collaboration across current workstreams focusing on research, innovation, and engagement. Increasingly shape the Hub’s work around problems the Hub will tackle in order to formulate a cohesive offering to its users, particularly policymakers. Support directors and their teams to embed this collaboration into the Hub’s strategy and ways of working.
  • Ensure the Hub is equipped to drive the global discourse around EdTech and development, and that it serves as a lead convener within the sector.
2.) External leadership
  • Represent the EdTech Hub with external stakeholders (e.g., governments including senior leaders in education ministries, bilateral and multilateral agencies, media, public and private sector including civil society organisations and private technology companies). Represent the Hub at key international events and raise the profile of the Hub as a key player in the global education architecture.
  • Oversee and support the Hub’s interactions with existing and potential funders and partners to expand the Hub’s influence through partnerships.
3.) Represent the Hub with Executive Committee:
  • Coordinate the Executive Committee’s interactions with the Hub, with a focus on ensuring strong communication that makes the best use of the Executive Committee, strategically engaging donors to support the impact of the Hub.
  • Ensure the Hub delivers on agreed priorities which are proposed by the Core Delivery Team and approved by the Executive Committee
  • Be the key representative of the Hub with donors, and the Executive Committee
  • Be proactive about seeking direction and/or assistance from donors
  • Liaise directly with Executive Committee members and the (future) Advisory Board chair to ensure valuable two-way interactions between the Hub and its stakeholders
4.) Overall Hub management
  • Work closely with directors and Head of Operations to manage global Hub teams and personnel. Supervise the Directors and Head of Operations who lead work in their areas of expertise and responsibility.
  • Ensure a positive, learning-oriented working culture in a cross-organisational Hub. Motivate a diverse, experienced team to achieve impact through collaboration.
  • Chair the Core Delivery Team (the day-to-day management group for the Hub) and the Consortium Members’ Forum (where the six partner organisations convene to discuss their joint and individual interests vis a vis the Hub).
  • Ensure the resourcing needs of all workstreams are met and balanced, within the overall delivery framework for the Hub.


  • At least 15 years of relevant experience
  • Proven track record of effectively leading complex organisations/departments and managing and motivating large multi-disciplinary teams, across different geographies.
  • Proven leadership skills that foster excellence and efficient delivery
  • Ability to balance accountability and flexibility
  • Experience in global development
Experience of and/or expertise in:
  • managing multi-partner and/or multi-donor initiatives
  • managing large multi-million-pound budgets
  • motivating and supporting teams to ensure on time, high-quality delivery across multiple workstreams
The successful candidate will have expertise in one or more of the following:
  • Education technology
  • Education research
  • Education in low- and middle-income countries
  • Leading a new or entrepreneurial organization through a growth phase
Qualified candidates for this role will likely demonstrate the following characteristics: Results orientation: The Executive Director will drive a Hub-wide commitment to results, focusing the team on the Hub’s Theory of Change and continuously bringing them back to the mission of improving learning for children in low- and middle-income countries. They will proactively identify challenges, establish priorities, and delegate to the team to implement solutions. They are able to communicate progress and results clearly to stakeholders and make changes as needed if and when implementation stalls.

Inspiring leadership: The Executive Director will be able to lead the EdTech Hub by strengthening team members’ ability to contribute to overall goals. They will raise critical questions about the ability of the Hub to execute on its mission and offers proposals for improvements. They are able to challenge as well as support colleagues while holding team members accountable, with a balance of authority and approachability. They are able to lead teams from a range of organisation types, understanding and showing commitment to different ways of working. They will also be passionate about leading a team including people from around the globe and from different backgrounds.

Collaborative spirit: The Executive Director will build constructive relationships with and among Directors, advisors, and Executive Committee members and will foster a culture of trust and support throughout the Hub. They will be prepared to offer support and coaching as necessary and create a motivating and positive work environment.

Excellent communication: The Executive Director will ensure highly efficient and effective communication internally, across the consortium, and externally, supporting the sector to be well informed on issues related to EdTech. They will facilitate high-quality discussion among Directors, Executive Committee, and Advisory Board members, as well as other stakeholders. They will solicit input from the team, demonstrate empathy and emotional intelligence, and assert an informed opinion when needed to resolve disputes.

Flexibility: The Executive Director will demonstrate the ability to be agile and responsive, operating effectively in situations of uncertainty, able to balance high profile demands while delivering on day-to-day tasks. They will anticipate and manage risks. Even amid shifts (for example, due to Covid-19 response or changing needs of stakeholders or partners), the Executive Director is able to keep the team focused on the overall strategy and performing against KPIs, while making adjustments when necessary for the Hub’s success.

Knowledge of EdTech research, policies, and the international education sector: Can demonstrate thought leadership and engage in ongoing debates with leading scholars and policymakers in the field of education and technology in low- and middle-income country contexts. Understands and can navigate the global education architecture.

Champion diversity, equity and inclusion: The Executive Director will actively focus on inclusion and anti-racism. Within the Hub, this would include, for example, ensuring equitable policies and practices for the Hub’s diverse staff pool. Through the Hub’s activities, this would include a commitment to child safeguarding and Child Protection, zero-tolerance approach to abuse and a strong focus on gender and racial equity. Overall, the Executive Director will show unquestionable respect for those the Hub intends to serve and will represent this spirit internally and externally.

  • The Executive Director will be employed by Results for Development (R4D), the prime contractor of EdTech Hub. A recruitment committee made up of representatives of the Executive Committee, Hub Directors, and R4D as the Hub’s prime contract holder, will participate in the recruitment process.
