This post is classified A2-A4 on the Coordinated Organisations’ salary scale.

The post is subject to rotation. At the end of the 4-year assignment, notwithstanding possible extension of the appointment, a further assignment in an ESA establishment will be considered.


ESA Headquarters, Paris, France With a resident assignment at the Guiana Space Centre, Kourou, French Guiana.


Project Manager in charge of Energy and Infrastructure Sustainability at the European Spaceport Infrastructure Office, Launch Range Operations and Representation at CSG, Infrastructure and Value Chain, Directorate of Space Transportation.

With the objective of improving competitiveness, reducing the carbon footprint, and greening exploitation processes, you will manage a portfolio of activities to optimise and implement energy transition opportunities at the European Spaceport, in partnership with CNES and key internal and external stakeholders.


You will report to the Head of the European Spaceport Infrastructure Office in Launch Range Operations and Representation at the CSG.

Duties include:
  • Actively participating in developing an Energy Efficiency and environmental footprint strategy for the European spaceport, including spin-ins from comparable industrial sectors and disruptive solutions;
  • Partnering with CNES to identify and analyse energy industry trends and market regulations in order to proactively seek opportunities to reduce investment and operational expenditure, minimise development and operational risks and advance sustainability goals at the CSG;
  • Proposing and defining the most suitable renewable energy production technologies (solar, wind, biomass and biomethane power generation) and energy storage mixes to lower costs for both Launch Range and industry operations and reduce carbon footprints, while increasing robustness and availability of the overall electrical distribution system for manufacturing and launch processes;
  • Helping develop internal business cases, including providing inputs on financial models and building relationships with external suppliers and partners, local and regional entities and regulators, and technology providers;
  • Helping draw up the land, water and solid/liquid propellant master plans according to ESA/STS long-term prospects and to updates by CNES of the Energy Transition Master Plan at the CSG, while aligning them fully with the French Guiana Multi-year Energy roadmap and ESA long-term objectives;
  • Implementing the energy transition roadmap and energy management saving policy to improve Launch Base competitiveness and reduce its exploitation carbon footprint;
  • Following up the technical management of selected Core Launch Range Renewal activities by CNES at the CSG, in relation to its energy component, and participating in the evaluation of tender submissions/negotiations of corresponding contracts, in close Coordination with CNES;
  • Ensuring general Technical Support for implementation of ESA renewable energy initiatives on ESA-owned infrastructures;
  • Preparing and organising required reviews/key points in collaboration with the actors concerned, and participating in key milestones;
  • Ensuring an overall on-site overview of designated infrastructure activities in order to implement in an optimised manner the ESA contracts related to Exploitation (delegated by Value Chain Assessment and Assets Management) and Development (delegated by Future Space Transportation Preparation) and the CSG perimeter (including manufacturing assets, BEAP and Launch Complex assets);
  • As required, helping prepare procurement documents, including assessing related deliveries (e.g. Analysis of relevant scope vs costs);
  • Coordinating your activities with those of other Project Engineers/Managers from Launch Range Operations and Representation at CSG and reporting on them regularly to your line manager.

Technical competencies

Project experience and track record in complex projects management Knowledge of space transportation systems infrastructures and of European Spaceport Knowledge of production and operations in an industrial setting including safety constraints Experience in space industry and manufacturing processes Understanding of the renewable Energy Sector and green mobility French Language is mandatory

A Master’s degree or a PhD in an engineering discipline with experience in the production/industrial space sector is required, preferably in project implementation and system engineering.

Additional requirements

You should also have:
  • A strong interest in technical innovation and in the financing and regulation of new schemes;
  • Knowledge of the CSG exploitation processes including greening of space manufacturing processes (knowledge of the French Guiana Multi-year Energy roadmap will be considered an asset);
  • The ability to reach solution-oriented, pragmatic and timely decisions of high standard and integrity;
  • The ability to anticipate problems, take a positive critical attitude, solve complex issues and relate situations to their context.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
