Job Description

  Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters Duty Stations.

Description of task UN Volunteers should be provided equal duty of care as extended to all host entity personnel. Host entity support to the UN Volunteer includes, but is not limited to:
  • Introductory briefings about the organisation and office-related context including security, emergency procedures, good cultural practice and orientation to the local environment;
  • Support with arrival Administration including setting-up of bank accounts, residence permit applications and completion of other official processes as required by the host government or host entity;
  • Structured guidance, mentoring and coaching by a supervisor including a clear workplan and performance appraisal;
  • Access to office space, equipment, IT support and any other systems and tools required to complete the objectives of the assignment including a host entity email address;
  • Access to shared host entity corporate knowledge, training and learning; ​
  • Inclusion of the volunteer in emergency procedures such as evacuations;
  • Leave management;
  • DSA for official travel, when applicable​;
  • All changes in the Description of Assignment occurring between recruitment and arrival or during the assignment need to be formalized with the United Nations Volunteer Programme;
  • Investigate misconduct: sharing reports with the UNV;
  • Provide emergency assistance, e.g. the death of volunteer or medical evacuation, in collaboration with UNV. Accept letters of guarantees or potential liabilities for covering medical costs not claimable under medical insurance in extraordinary situations (e.g. isolation facilities` services during pandemics).
Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of “the Policy Specialist for Climate Strategies and Policy Team” or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer “Climate Policy Analyst” will: 1. Policy Analysis and Research

  • Analyse contents of countries’ climate plans (i.e. Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), Long-Term Strategies (LTS), Low-Emissions Development Strategies(LEDS), National Adaptation Plans (NAP) etc.) to identify trends and lessons learned to feed into UNDP’s global positioning and advocacy work, as well as policy and programing support to countries.
  • Analyse and synthesize latest research papers, studies, and major reports on Climate Change and related topics to feed into policy and programming advisory notes and materials for country support
  • Contribute to identify partnership and new ideas for ensuring better quality of policy research and analysis on climate related policies and strategies that benefit the work of UNDP to effectively serve countries.
2. Knowledge management and results reporting

  • Supporting maintaining progress reporting tracker and updating content of Climate Promise database and Dashboard
  • Take stock of UNDP’s latest programme results, toolkits and knowledge products under the Climate Promise support at HQ, regional and country level
  • Promote knowledge sharing among countries and peers within the Community of Practice related to climate policy and strategies
  • Contribute to the preparation of briefing materials to support corporate briefing and reporting processes
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:
  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
Qualifications/Requirements Required degree level: Master degree or equivalent Education - Additional Comments:
  • Advanced higher degree (Master’s or equivalent) in the field of climate change and environmental science, international development and or related fields; a first-level university degree or equivalent in combination with relevant training and/or professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree;
Required experience: 36 Months Experience remark:
  • Demonstrated knowledge on inter-governmental processes on climate change such as NDCs, LTSs, NAPs etc..
  • Excellent oral and written skills in English; Knowledge of French and Spanish is an advantage
  • Knowledge and a proficient user of Microsoft Office productivity tools; advanced knowledge on using MS Excel is an asset.
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;

Area of expertise: Other energy, environment and climate change related experience Area of expertise details:
  • At least 3 years of professional work experience in conducting policy research and analyses related to climate change
