Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) was established to promote economic and social development in the Arab region. ESCWA operates in multiple countries across the Arab region, focusing on sustainable development and climate resilience. The organization aims to enhance the capacity of Arab States to respond to climate change challenges through regional cooperation and evidence-based policymaking.

Job Overview:
The Climate Change Expert position is designed to contribute significantly to the preparation and organization of various meetings and workshops focused on climate change, particularly in relation to sand and dust storms and green finance taxonomies. The expert will be responsible for drafting and finalizing meeting notes, country fact sheets, presentations, and reports based on consultations and feedback. This role requires collaboration with internal and external partners to ensure effective knowledge management and dissemination of information. The expert will also support the mapping of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) submissions by Arab States, focusing on financial needs and commitments related to climate adaptation and mitigation. The position is hybrid, allowing for a combination of remote and in-office work, and is expected to last for six months.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will have a range of responsibilities, including:
  • Supporting the organization of meetings, workshops, and events related to climate change, sand and dust storms, and green finance taxonomies.
  • Drafting information notes and preparing presentations, contact lists, and other meeting-related materials.
  • Preparing inputs for online platforms and e-training tools in both English and Arabic.
  • Contributing to the drafting, review, finalization, and dissemination of technical materials that inform climate change policymaking.
  • Preparing meeting reports that summarize discussions, outcomes, and next steps in both English and Arabic.
  • Providing ad hoc support on climate change-related deliverables as needed.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a master’s degree in climate change, engineering, environmental science, or a related field. Additionally, a minimum of five years of relevant experience in climate change, natural resources management, or environmental fields is required. Professional experience specifically related to climate change and sand and dust storms in the Arab region is essential. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical and communication skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

Educational Background:
A master’s degree in climate change, engineering, environmental science, or a closely related field is mandatory for this position. This educational background ensures that the candidate has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to address complex climate issues effectively.

Experience:
The position requires at least five years of professional experience in fields related to climate change, natural resources management, or environmental science. This experience should include work specifically focused on climate change impacts and responses in the Arab region, particularly concerning sand and dust storms.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Arabic is required for this position, with a strong emphasis on the ability to speak, read, write, and understand both languages. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas of language proficiency.
