Job Overview:
The position of Online Volunteer for the BESPIN Regional Trialogue involves conducting essential research to support the upcoming Trialogue event scheduled for May 2026 in Skopje, North Macedonia. This role is crucial for ensuring that the Trialogue is informed by the specific national contexts of participating countries. Volunteers will be responsible for gathering and synthesizing information related to biodiversity, ecosystem services, and climate change, focusing on the connections between the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The work will contribute to the development of a comprehensive background document that will guide discussions and actions during the Trialogue, ultimately aiming to enhance the integration of biodiversity and climate knowledge into national policies and practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Online Volunteer include conducting a targeted review of the national context regarding biodiversity and climate change, identifying and mapping key national institutions and stakeholders involved in relevant policies, compiling and summarizing national strategies and initiatives related to biodiversity-climate synergies, and preparing a concise country summary note. Volunteers will also be expected to identify examples of good practices, challenges, and gaps in the uptake of biodiversity and climate knowledge at the national level. This role requires a proactive approach to research and collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure that the Trialogue is grounded in the realities of each participating country.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Online Volunteer position should possess strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear and concise summaries. A background in environmental science, policy, or a related field is preferred, along with familiarity with biodiversity and climate change issues. Volunteers should demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with others. A commitment to the mission of BES-Net and an understanding of the importance of integrating biodiversity considerations into policy-making are essential.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is required for this position, ideally at least a bachelor's degree in environmental science, ecology, biology, climate science, or a related field. Advanced degrees or coursework in these areas would be advantageous, as they would provide a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in biodiversity and climate interactions.

Experience:
While specific prior experience may not be mandatory, any previous involvement in research, policy analysis, or volunteer work related to biodiversity, climate change, or environmental issues would be beneficial. Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as all communications and documentation will be conducted in English. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the participating countries (such as Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Greek, Kazakh, Moldovan, Montenegrin, Macedonian, Serbian, Tajik, or Uzbek) would be considered an asset, enhancing the volunteer's ability to engage with local stakeholders and resources.

The assignment is expected to be part-time, allowing flexibility for volunteers to manage their time effectively while contributing to the Trialogue preparations. The role is open to individuals from the participating countries, and volunteers will work closely with the Partnership Building and Facilitation Specialist at UNDP/BES-Net to ensure their contributions are aligned with the overall objectives of the Trialogue.
