Job Overview: The position of Driver at IOM is critical in ensuring the safe and reliable transportation of IOM officials and visitors. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving assigned vehicles, managing their maintenance, and ensuring that they are roadworthy. This role requires a high level of discretion and integrity, as the driver will often be privy to sensitive information. The driver will also be expected to navigate the complexities of the current political landscape in Syria, ensuring the safety of passengers while adhering to the highest standards of professionalism. The position involves not only driving but also assisting with clerical duties when necessary, making it a multifaceted role that supports the overall operations of IOM in a challenging environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Driver will be responsible for the following duties:
Drive assigned IOM office vehicle(s) safely and responsibly.
Manage the day-to-day maintenance of the vehicle(s) to ensure they are in good working condition, including daily checks of tires, brakes, engine oil, and other essential components.
Arrange for minor repairs and ensure that the vehicles are kept clean and presentable.
Ensure that vehicles undergo regular service intervals and keep accurate records of spare parts and maintenance activities.
Identify the most direct and safe routes to destinations, taking into account current road conditions and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security issues.
Ensure that the vehicle is used only for official business as directed by the supervisor.
Prepare daily log sheets and monthly reports summarizing vehicle usage, including mileage and fuel consumption.
Maintain confidentiality and discretion in all discussions involving IOM officials.
Take appropriate actions to mitigate potential security threats to IOM officials and property. 1
Facilitate immigration and customs formalities for official personnel at airports. 1
Collect and deliver mail, documents, and other communications as required. 1
Assist field office staff with clerical duties such as answering calls and making photocopies when needed. 1
Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate for the Driver position should possess the following qualifications:
A high school degree or certificate with a minimum of 2 years of relevant working experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution.
A valid national driver’s license is mandatory.
Knowledge of driving rules and regulations is essential.
Experience in driving various makes and models of vehicles is required.
Skills in performing minor vehicle repairs are advantageous.
Proficiency in using radio, email, telephone, and other communication applications is necessary.
Educational Background: Candidates must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent certification. A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution is preferred. Accredited universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database, ensuring that the educational background meets international standards.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in driving and vehicle maintenance. Experience in a humanitarian or international organization is an advantage, as it provides familiarity with the operational context in which IOM operates. Knowledge of local driving conditions and regulations is also beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in both English and Arabic is required for this position, both oral and written. This is crucial for effective communication within the organization and with external stakeholders. Proficiency in additional languages such as French or Spanish is considered an asset, as IOM operates in multiple linguistic contexts. Language proficiency will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and oral assessments.
