Job Overview:
The Housing Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the Housing Specialist to ensure a coordinated and client-centered delivery of housing services. This position is designed to educate and empower clients, helping them to understand and navigate the local housing system effectively. The Housing Assistant will be involved in various activities, including supporting logistics and facilitating housing setups, as well as conducting Cultural Orientation sessions and workshops that inform clients about rental housing expectations. The role requires a proactive approach to assist clients in overcoming barriers to housing stability and ensuring they have the necessary resources and knowledge to thrive in their new environments. The Housing Assistant will also be responsible for maintaining clear communication with direct service staff to meet client housing needs effectively, thereby contributing to a collaborative and supportive team environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Housing Assistant include, but are not limited to: collaborating closely with direct service staff to ensure a coordinated and client-centered delivery of housing services; educating and empowering clients to navigate the local housing system, including understanding lease agreements, tenant rights and responsibilities, and communication with landlords; coordinating client home repair requests and providing ongoing maintenance education; supporting the logistics and facilitation of housing setups, including utility installation, furniture delivery, and home safety inspections; facilitating Cultural Orientation sessions and housing workshops to inform clients about rental housing expectations and budgeting; using a personal, insured vehicle to travel and transport clients or materials as needed; assisting with documentation and data entry to ensure timely and accurate recordkeeping; and performing other duties as assigned to contribute to a collaborative, client-centered team environment.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the Housing Assistant position include a high school diploma or GED, with a university degree being a plus. A minimum of one year of relevant professional experience is required, preferably in non-profit, housing, or customer service-related industries. Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations is preferred. Candidates should possess strong relationship-building, diplomacy, and networking skills, along with the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment. A self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills, the candidate should also demonstrate superb organization, planning, and logistical skills, as well as attention to detail and accuracy in their work. The ability to regularly lift approximately 50 lbs is also necessary.

Educational Background:

Experience:

Languages:
Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages spoken by the client group is considered a plus, as it enhances communication and support for clients from diverse backgrounds.

Additional Notes:
The Housing Assistant position is based in Wichita, Kansas, and may require occasional weekend and/or evening work. The compensation for this role ranges from $17.40 to $18.00 per hour, with pay rates based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget considerations. The IRC offers a comprehensive benefits package for US-based employees, which includes 10 sick days, 10 US holidays, and 20-25 paid time off days depending on the role and tenure. Medical insurance starts at $143 per month, with dental and vision plans available at low monthly rates.
