The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) was established in December 1999 and serves as the focal point within the United Nations system for coordinating efforts to reduce disaster risks. With a mission to ensure synergies among disaster reduction activities across the UN and regional organizations, UNDRR operates in both developed and developing countries. The organization is led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and has over 150 staff members based in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, as well as in various regional offices. UNDRR is committed to guiding, monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, while also supporting regional and national efforts to enhance disaster resilience. The UNDRR Global Education and Training Institute (GETI), located in Incheon, South Korea, was established in 2010 to cultivate a new generation of professionals in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, aiming to build resilient societies. UNDRR GETI also serves as the global secretariat for the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) initiative, which provides a structured roadmap for cities to enhance their resilience through strategic planning and community engagement. The institute oversees various toolkits and capacity development programs focused on urban resilience, contributing to the broader goals of MCR2030.

Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is based at the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), specifically within the Global Education and Training Institute (GETI) in Incheon, South Korea. The intern will report directly to the Programme Management Officer in the Capacity Development Section of GETI. The primary focus of this internship is to support the team in its capacity-building programs and provide technical assistance related to urban disaster risk reduction and resilience, particularly in connection with the MCR2030 initiative. Interns will engage in various tasks that include conducting internet-based research to gather information on best practices and case studies, particularly in urban disaster and climate resilience. They will also assist in the development and maintenance of UNDRR's urban disaster resilience toolkits, including the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities and its accompanying tools. Additionally, interns will support the organization and delivery of capacity development training workshops aimed at government officials and partners, focusing on urban resilience and disaster risk reduction. The role will also involve contributing to the creation of relevant publications, drafting background documents, and preparing reports and presentations. Interns will be expected to collect and analyze data related to training participants and prepare training reports, among other assigned tasks. This internship is designed to be a full-time, in-person role, lasting a minimum of two months and a maximum of six months, starting in February 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks that include:
  • Conducting internet-based research to collect information on good practices and case studies related to urban disaster and climate resilience.
  • Assisting in the development, maintenance, and updating of UNDRR's urban disaster resilience toolkits, including the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities and its addenda, as well as all accompanying Excel tools.
  • Supporting the preparation, coordination, and delivery of capacity development training workshops for government officials and partners, particularly focusing on urban resilience and disaster risk reduction.
  • Contributing to the development of relevant publications and writing news articles and newsletters.
  • Assisting in drafting and preparing background documents, concept notes, reports, and presentations.
  • Collecting disaggregated data on training participants, analyzing training evaluation surveys, and preparing training reports.
  • Performing other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required for applicants to the UN Internship Programme, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Applicants must be students in their final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s, or Ph.D. program, or have completed such programs. Additionally, applicants should possess good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Intermediate to advanced skills in MS Excel are desirable, as well as skills in design software such as Canva and Adobe InDesign. A demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter are essential. Furthermore, applicants must show the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, demonstrating a willingness to understand and tolerate differing opinions and views.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes being enrolled in or having completed a graduate program (second university degree or equivalent) or being in the final year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent). This educational requirement ensures that candidates have a foundational understanding of the principles and practices relevant to disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, which are critical for the tasks they will undertake during the internship.

Experience:
While the internship does not require professional work experience, it is essential that applicants have a field of study that is closely related to the internship position they are applying for. This means that candidates should ideally have academic experience or coursework that aligns with disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, or related fields, which will enable them to contribute effectively to the team's objectives.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Additionally, knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish), as well as Korean and/or Portuguese, is considered an asset. This multilingual capability is beneficial for engaging with diverse stakeholders and enhancing communication within the international context of the UN.

Additional Notes:
The internship is unpaid and requires full-time, in-person commitment. Interns are expected to work five days a week under the supervision of a designated staff member. The duration of the internship ranges from a minimum of two months to a maximum of six months, depending on the needs of the office. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Those who are not citizens or permanent residents of South Korea may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization before starting the internship. It is important for successful candidates to discuss their specific visa requirements prior to accepting the internship offer. Furthermore, it is emphasized that the United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, ensuring that applicants are not subjected to any financial burdens related to their application.
