Job Overview: The Principal Environmental and Social Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting the EBRD's commitments under its Environmental and Social Policy. This position involves working closely with Associate Directors, Heads of Sector, and Directors within the Environment and Sustainability Division to ensure effective environmental and social appraisal and monitoring of the Bank's portfolio of projects across various sectors. The Principal will provide specialist input to the appraisal and monitoring processes, particularly for complex and high-risk projects. This role requires a deep understanding of environmental and social issues, as well as the ability to contribute to the continuous improvement of internal processes and procedures. The Principal will also be responsible for representing the ESD team at various forums and supporting capacity-building initiatives within the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Principal will be tasked with providing specialist input to projects and Technical Cooperation initiatives, managing delivery of specific sub-projects or tasks, and coordinating project and consultant teams. Responsibilities include conducting analytical and technical reviews, developing methodologies, monitoring outputs and outcomes, and contributing to the assessment of environmental and social compliance. The Principal will also prepare internal and external reports, represent the ESD team at meetings, and mentor staff on environmental and social matters. Additional duties involve supporting internal capacity-building initiatives, managing data, and contributing to the continuous improvement of internal processes and procedures.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field, or have comparable professional experience. A proven track record in appraising complex environmental and social risks and impacts is essential, along with knowledge of international good practice standards and guidelines. Familiarity with financing instruments and policies, as well as strong interpersonal skills, is required. The ability to communicate complex policy and technical issues effectively to a diverse range of stakeholders is also crucial.
Educational Background: A degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field is required. Candidates with comparable professional experience may also be considered. A strong academic background in relevant disciplines will be advantageous for this role.
Experience: Candidates should have substantial experience in project management, particularly in leading or contributing to multi-disciplinary teams. Experience in appraising environmental and social risks and impacts of various projects and sectors is essential. The ability to apply knowledge of environmental and social issues to the assessment of investment projects is also required.
Languages: Excellent written and spoken English is mandatory. Familiarity with a language of the EBRD countries of operations would be advantageous, and for resident office appointments, local language fluency will be required.
