Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Development System was reformed on January 1, 2019, to enhance its effectiveness in achieving the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO) play a crucial role in this reform, led by an empowered UN Resident Coordinator who represents the UN Secretary-General at the country level. The organization aims to support countries in achieving their development priorities and the SDGs, operating in various countries worldwide with a commitment to gender equality and diversity.

Job Overview:
The Driver position is located in the Resident Coordinator's Office in Chad and reports directly to the Head of the Resident Coordinator's Office/Team Leader. The primary function of this role is to ensure the safe transportation of authorized personnel and, in peacekeeping missions, the transport of general cargo and specialized hazardous goods. The Driver is expected to maintain a high level of professionalism and efficiency, ensuring that all driving duties are performed safely and in accordance with UN regulations. This includes making deliveries, handling minor purchases, and facilitating customs formalities for official personnel at the airport. The role also involves maintaining the assigned vehicle, logging official trips, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The Driver must demonstrate good judgment and professionalism in all assignments, contributing to the overall mission of the UN in Chad.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Driver's responsibilities include:
  • Safely driving vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel and cargo.
  • Making regular deliveries of parcels and documents between the UN office and other institutions.
  • Handling minor purchases and collecting urgent items from local suppliers.
  • Facilitating customs formalities for official personnel at the airport.
  • Maintaining effective and tactful communication with officials and visitors.
  • Performing day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle, including checking oil, water, battery, brakes, and tires, and arranging for repairs as needed.
  • Logging official trips, daily mileage, gas consumption, and maintenance activities.
  • Ensuring compliance with rules and regulations in case of accidents.
  • Applying good judgment in all assignments and performing additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a valid National Driver's License and a clean driving record. A valid defensive driving certificate is desirable. Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, as well as familiarity with the area and current road conditions, is essential. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, efficiency, and a commitment to gender equality in their work. The ability to handle stressful situations calmly and effectively is also required.

Educational Background:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. A relevant first-level university degree may be accepted in lieu of two years of required experience, providing flexibility in the educational requirements for candidates with substantial experience.

Experience:
Candidates must have a minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience as a driver, demonstrating a safe driving record. Experience in driving various types of vehicles, including vans and other motorized vehicles, is required. Experience working with the United Nations or other international organizations is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's suitability for the role.

Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, proficiency in French is required at UN Level II, while Arabic is desirable at UN Level I. Candidates must demonstrate their language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking as per the UN Language Framework.

This is a Fixed Term position, initially for one year, with the possibility of extension subject to funding availability and budgetary approval. The position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that applicants must be authorized to work in Chad.
