Job Overview: The Principal Social Advisor position within the Environment and Sustainability Department (ESD) at the EBRD is a critical role aimed at ensuring the bank's Environmental and Social Policy (ESP) commitments are met. The successful candidate will be responsible for the social assessment, appraisal, and monitoring of complex and high-risk projects across various sectors, including mining, energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, services, agribusiness, and biofuels. Duties and Responsibilities: The Principal Social Advisor will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including leading and contributing to the environmental and social appraisal and monitoring of Bank-financed projects. Key duties include conducting social assessments, appraisals, and monitoring related to land acquisition and resettlement, labor conditions, occupational health and safety, supply chains, cultural heritage, and stakeholder engagement. The advisor will undertake site visits to EBRD's countries of operation, provide strategic input on compliance and sustainability matters, and engage with key stakeholders such as EBRD staff, clients, government representatives, and civil society organizations. Additionally, the advisor will manage or support internal and external project teams, represent ESD at meetings and consultation events, take ownership of key social policy areas, mentor junior staff, and support innovation in data management and reporting methodologies. The role requires adherence to the Bank's Behavioral Competencies and Corporate Behaviours.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Principal Social Advisor position should possess a degree in social sciences, economics, international development, or related fields. A proven track record in assessing, appraising, and managing social risks on complex and high-risk projects in sectors such as mining, energy, and infrastructure is essential. Strong knowledge of international social safeguards and standards, practical experience in social impact assessments, labor assessments, and stakeholder engagement are critical. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team. Experience working with indigenous peoples and public sector entities is advantageous.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a degree in social sciences, economics, international development, or a related field.
