Job Overview: The Conflict Resolution Officer will play a crucial role in supporting the Ombudsperson program under the direct supervision of the Deputy Ombudsperson. This position involves providing technical support in various aspects, including case management, research, and the preparation of reports and presentations. The officer will oversee case management processes, assist with the intake and follow-up of cases, and compile statistics for regular reporting. Additionally, the role requires identifying systemic issues and advising on preventive actions to enhance morale and improve the organizational climate. The officer will also conduct outreach activities, implement training programs in conflict prevention and resolution, and support the work of the Ombudsperson on equity and fair treatment issues. The overarching goal is to create a respectful working environment and prevent conflicts from escalating, thereby improving staff productivity and morale.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Conflict Resolution Officer include:
Providing technical support to the Ombudsperson program, particularly in case management, research, and reporting.
Overseeing the intake and follow-up of cases, ensuring accurate compilation of statistics and preparation of bi-monthly and annual reports.
Researching and identifying systemic issues to recommend preventive actions that boost morale and improve the organizational climate.
Preparing reports on trends and activities, identifying patterns or problem areas in organizational policies and practices, and recommending revisions or improvements.
Conducting outreach activities, including preparing and editing texts, brochures, articles, presentations, and other documents.
Implementing training programs in conflict prevention and resolution to foster a trusting and respectful working environment.
Organizing and supporting meetings and training sessions related to conflict resolution.
Providing substantive support on issues related to equity and fair treatment, including gender issues to prevent discrimination and ensure equal participation.
Performing other duties as assigned by the Deputy Ombudsperson.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in Behavioral Sciences, Conflict Resolution, Law, Social Sciences, Human Resources, or a related field from an accredited academic institution, along with five years of relevant professional experience. Alternatively, a University degree in the aforementioned fields with seven years of relevant professional experience is acceptable. Ombuds Certification is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of conflict management practices and the ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural setting.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree in relevant fields such as Behavioral Sciences, Conflict Resolution, Law, Social Sciences, or Human Resources from an accredited institution. Candidates with a University degree in these fields must have additional years of relevant professional experience to qualify. Accreditation from institutions listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database is essential.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have substantial experience in professional conflict management practices, including mediation, ombuds, and conflict prevention. Candidates should have experience in case management from intake to closure, working in multi-cultural settings, and providing information about policies and rules. Additionally, experience in building trust, outreach, and assisting staff in evaluating options for conflict resolution is necessary.
Languages: Fluency in English and Arabic is required for this position, both oral and written. Candidates must also have a working knowledge of another official UN language, such as Chinese, French, Spanish, or Russian, which is strongly desired. Language proficiency will be evaluated during the selection process, potentially including written and/or oral assessments.
Additional Notes: This position is classified as a Special Short-term ungraded contract, with an initial duration of six months, extendable up to nine months. The role is categorized as professional, and candidates must be mobile, as internationally recruited professional staff are required to be flexible in their assignments. The appointment is contingent upon medical fitness certification, residency or visa requirements, and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security clearances.
