Job Description

Job Overview:
This internship is designed to provide a comprehensive experience in the Chinese Unit of the Web Services Section within the News and Media Division of the Department of Global Communications. The intern will engage in various tasks that contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of the UN's flagship public internet website, www.un.org, along with its related sub-sites. The position is full-time and in-person, although it can be adjusted to accommodate the successful candidate's needs. The internship is expected to last between 3 to 6 months, allowing the intern to gain valuable insights into the workings of the UN and its digital communication strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a range of duties, including conducting research on thematic issues relevant to the UN, adapting content for the web by rewriting or translating materials from English to Chinese, and assisting in the updating of websites using HTML, SHTML, CSS, or platforms like WordPress and Drupal. Additional responsibilities include drafting, formatting, editing, and posting original web content and news stories, which may involve incorporating graphics, photos, and videos. The intern will also edit existing videos by adding subtitles or audio and may produce short videos from existing footage. Utilizing multimedia communications and IT/web-related tools, such as Adobe Creative Suite and various programming languages (PHP, HTML5, CSS3), will be essential for performing these tasks. Furthermore, the intern will analyze data and web metrics, producing reports as needed to inform ongoing web development efforts.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Additionally, candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. The ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs is also essential, as is a willingness to understand and tolerate differing opinions and views.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion must be attached to the application, and an official certificate will be required at a later stage. A field of study closely related to the internship is required, although prior professional work experience is not mandatory.

Experience:
While applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, they should possess relevant academic knowledge and skills that align with the internship's focus. Familiarity with web-related tools and the ability to draft, format, edit, and post original website content is desirable, as is experience with multimedia communications.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Chinese is required for this position, as these are the primary languages used in the role. Knowledge of another UN official language is considered desirable, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively within the UN's multilingual environment.
