Job Overview: The Senior Media and Communications Associate will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of the Regional Office Media and Communication Strategy. This position involves contributing to an Outreach and Communications Strategy aimed at raising awareness of IOM's work and promoting an accurate narrative on migration among various stakeholders, including media, UN agencies, and government partners in the region. The Associate will be responsible for gathering, drafting, and disseminating public information regarding IOM activities, preparing public information materials for press briefings, newsletters, websites, and social media, while ensuring gender awareness is integrated into all communications. The role requires close coordination with Regional Office and Country Offices' staff on media, public information, event management, and visibility issues, as well as providing logistical and technical support for global and UN-led campaigns. The Associate will also draft content to showcase IOM activities at external events, collaborate with Country Offices to produce human-interest stories and multimedia content, and support the development of resources for crisis-affected communities, particularly in relation to climate change. Timely publication and distribution of media content across various channels, including social media, is also a key responsibility, alongside contributing to new communications initiatives such as podcasts and infographics. The position requires building and strengthening relationships with international and local media to enhance IOM's reputation and participating in interagency media and communication working groups to foster information flow and community engagement.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Media and Communications Associate will have a comprehensive set of duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to: supporting the implementation of the Regional Office Media and Communication Strategy; contributing to the Outreach and Communications Strategy; gathering, drafting, and disseminating public information on IOM activities; preparing public information materials for various platforms; coordinating with Regional and Country Office staff on media and visibility issues; providing logistical and technical support for campaigns; drafting content for external events; collaborating with Country Offices to produce multimedia content; developing resources for crisis-affected communities; ensuring timely publication of media content; contributing to new communications initiatives; building relationships with media; participating in interagency working groups; providing training sessions on communications best practices; monitoring media trends; and performing other duties as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a High School Degree/Certificate with seven years of relevant professional experience, or a University degree in Media and Communications, Public Information, Journalism, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with five years of relevant professional experience. Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. Additionally, candidates should have experience in a public information role at a UN or similar agency and experience working for a news media organization. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, along with demonstrated high competency as a writer and editor in English. Knowledge of graphic design, web, social media, and video production is required, as well as familiarity with international organizations and migration-related issues in the region. Candidates should be self-motivated, able to work under pressure with minimal supervision, and possess attention to detail and organizational skills.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes either a High School Degree/Certificate with seven years of relevant professional experience or a University degree in Media and Communications, Public Information, Journalism, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with five years of relevant professional experience. It is important that the educational qualifications are from accredited institutions recognized by the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience: The level of experience needed for this position includes a minimum of seven years of relevant professional experience for candidates with a High School Degree/Certificate, or five years for those with a University degree. Experience in a public information or similar role at a UN or similar agency is essential, as is experience working for a news media organization. Candidates should demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as a high level of competency in writing and editing in English.
Languages: Fluency in English and Thai is required for this position, both oral and written. Additionally, working knowledge of any other language of the region is considered an advantage. IOM's official languages include English, French, and Spanish, but proficiency in Thai is mandatory for non-Thai candidates applying for this position.
Additional Notes: This position is classified as General Service, G.7, and is a One Year Fixed Term appointment with an estimated start date as soon as possible.
