Job Overview: The Biogas Specialist position is a critical role within the FAO Egypt Office, focusing on promoting biogas production from animal waste as an environmentally friendly waste management solution. The specialist will work under the supervision of the Project Manager and collaborate closely with the project team and other stakeholders involved in the implementation of the biogas project. The role requires a strong technical focus on assessing the feasibility and sustainability of biogas production, as well as developing communication materials to advocate for its adoption. The Biogas Specialist will be responsible for conducting assessments, identifying beneficiaries, designing biogas development requirements, and providing training to livestock farmers on biogas production techniques. This position is essential for advancing sustainable agricultural practices and contributing to the overall goals of food security and environmental sustainability in Egypt.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Biogas Specialist will undertake a variety of tasks, including:
Conducting feasibility and sustainability assessments for biogas production using animal waste, including cost-benefit analyses for small-scale versus large-scale operations.
Identifying and selecting beneficiary livestock producers for piloting biogas development initiatives.
Designing and consulting with relevant stakeholders to establish the requirements for biogas development.
Assisting in the procurement of necessary inputs and services for biogas production.
Supporting private companies and enterprises involved in biogas development and maintenance.
Aiding in the construction of physical infrastructure required for biogas production.
Developing a practical manual on biogas production from animal waste.
Training livestock farmers on biogas production techniques.
Monitoring and following up on the pilot biogas development program. 1
Creating communication materials and short animation movies to promote biogas as an environmentally friendly waste management solution and a source of green energy.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree in agricultural science, veterinary science, or a related field. Additionally, they should have at least three years of relevant experience in biogas production and the preparation of related communication materials. A working knowledge of Arabic and limited knowledge of English is required, and candidates must be nationals of Egypt. The FAO core competencies expected from candidates include a focus on results, teamwork, effective communication, building relationships, and knowledge sharing.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in agriculture science, veterinary science, or a closely related field. It is essential that the degree is obtained from an institution accredited or recognized in the World Higher Education Database (WHED).
Experience: The position requires a minimum of three years of relevant experience in biogas production, which includes practical knowledge and skills in the preparation of communication materials related to biogas initiatives. Experience in livestock production and safe disposal of animal wastes is also highly relevant.
Languages: The mandatory language requirement for this position is a working knowledge of Arabic. Additionally, candidates should have limited knowledge of English, which is considered a good to have skill for effective communication within the organization and with international stakeholders.
