Job Overview: The Youth Specialist position within the Youth Support Services team at 54 reasons is a full-time, maximum term role based in Mount Isa, Queensland, through to June 202
This role is designed for individuals who are passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people, particularly those who lack protective factors such as family support, community ties, and cultural connections. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive support to young people at risk of entering the Youth Justice System, ensuring that their needs are met through culturally responsive services that incorporate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. The role requires a commitment to empowering young people to lead safe, healthy, and active lives, while also addressing the complexities of intergenerational trauma and child protection concerns.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Youth Specialist will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Providing direct support to young people who are disengaged from school and at risk of entering the Youth Justice System.
Developing and implementing individualized support plans that prioritize the voices and needs of young people.
Collaborating with families, communities, and other stakeholders to create a supportive network for young people.
Embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into design" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">program design, delivery, and evaluation.
Conducting assessments to identify the needs and strengths of young people and their families.
Maintaining accurate and confidential records of interactions and progress.
Participating in professional development and training opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in youth work and case management.
Engaging in reflective practice and supervision to ensure the highest quality of service delivery.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Youth Specialist position must possess the following qualifications:
Demonstrated skills and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.
Experience in youth work or case management roles, or relevant placements for recent graduates.
A strong understanding of complex intergenerational trauma and its impact on young people.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with young people and their families.
A commitment to child protection and the ability to respond safely and effectively to concerns.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should have a relevant qualification in social work, youth work, psychology, or a related field. This educational background will provide the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to support young people effectively.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a demonstrated level of experience in youth work or case management. This can include direct experience working with young people who are disengaged from education, involved with the justice system, or have experienced trauma. Recent graduates with relevant placements may also be considered, provided they can demonstrate a strong understanding of the challenges faced by young people in these contexts.
Languages: While the primary language for this position is English, proficiency in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages would be considered an asset. Strong communication skills are essential for engaging with young people and their families effectively.

The role offers an award rate salary at Level 4.1, currently $44.58 per hour, plus superannuation and full salary packaging benefits.
