FHI 360's Crisis Response team is actively involved in humanitarian efforts in regions affected by conflict, such as Tigray, Amhara, Afar, and Somali Regions, and is expanding its operations to the Oromia Region in Negele East Borena, Ethiopia, in collaboration with the national organization, Pastoralist Concern (PC).
Job Overview: The Pharmacy Assistant position is crucial for supporting health and nutrition programming at the Shire field office under the supervision of a senior pharmaceutical officer. The role involves managing the pharmaceutical warehouse, overseeing daily activities related to pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, and ensuring compliance with established guidelines. The Pharmacy Assistant will be responsible for receiving, storing, and issuing pharmaceuticals to health facilities while maintaining accurate records of all transactions. This position also requires collaboration with the logistics team to ensure proper dispensing and distribution protocols are followed. The Pharmacy Assistant will conduct supportive supervision visits to health facilities to assess needs and collect data on pharmaceutical availability and consumption, working closely with regional health bureau pharmacy professionals to enhance supply chain management.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Pharmacy Assistant will manage the pharmaceutical warehouse, ensuring optimal conditions such as temperature control and organization. Responsibilities include receiving pharmaceuticals, storing them according to guidelines, and issuing them to health facilities. The Assistant must guarantee proper cold chain management, handle expired or damaged products appropriately, and maintain accurate records of all medical items in line with FHI 360 protocols. Regular updates on inventory and drug consumption will be required, along with the development of stock level alerts to prevent shortages. The Assistant will also liaise with the logistics department regarding orders and distribution, follow departmental policies, and perform miscellaneous duties as assigned by the health and nutrition or logistics teams.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess proficiency in database management software and online search tools, with a strong sensitivity to cultural diversity and an understanding of the political and ethical issues in the assigned areas. Excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational and analytical skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite are essential. The ability to analyze data, identify errors, and prepare reports is required, along with problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively with clients and staff.
Educational Background: An Associate degree in pharmacy is required for this position, ensuring that candidates have the foundational knowledge necessary for pharmaceutical management and operations.
Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience working as a pharmacist is required, with previous experience in donor-funded programs, particularly with USAID/BHA, considered a plus. Experience with humanitarian organizations is advantageous, and candidates must be willing to travel to program implementation sites and stay in the field as needed.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent communication skills in the local language being highly desirable. This bilingual capability will enhance interactions with local staff and communities.
