Job Overview: The English Language Training (ELT) Instructor plays a crucial role in providing integrated English language instruction tailored to the needs of non-native English speakers. This position involves developing and implementing a curriculum that not only teaches English but also incorporates essential life skills, job skills, and digital literacy. The ELT Instructor will be responsible for student recruitment, registration, and tracking attendance, as well as supporting student retention and progress assessments. The instructor will work closely with the Employment Caseworker to ensure that clients meet their goals and objectives, thereby enhancing their employability and integration into the community. The role requires a commitment to creating an engaging and effective learning environment that fosters language acquisition and personal growth among refugee students.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the ELT Instructor include, but are not limited to: delivering integrated English language instruction, receiving client referrals, conducting initial assessments, and performing comprehensive evaluations of each student's language skills through pre-tests and post-tests. The instructor will plan, prepare, maintain, and update curricula and lesson plans for mixed-level classes, ensuring that the instruction meets the diverse needs of students ranging from pre-literate to high intermediate levels. The role also involves utilizing community volunteers as classroom assistants, managing lesson activities, and ensuring compliance with funding and licensing requirements. Additionally, the instructor will document attendance and student progress, compile data for reports, and manage attendance data reports for community partners. The instructor may also be required to teach classes both in-person and online, and undertake other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the ELT Instructor position must possess a Bachelor's degree in education, social services, or a related field, with a graduate degree preferred but not mandatory. An English language instruction certification is required. The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of experience teaching ESL, with a strong preference for those who have worked with immigrant populations and adults. Experience with workforce and job training programs is also preferred. Strong written and oral English language skills are essential, and TESOL certification is strongly preferred. Candidates should demonstrate cultural competency and sensitivity when working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and must be able to maintain accurate records of student enrollment and participation.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's degree in education, social services, or a related field. While a graduate degree is preferred, it is not a strict requirement. Additionally, candidates must hold a certification in English language instruction, which is essential for effectively teaching ESL to non-native speakers.
