Position Summary: MSI is creating a bench of editors who will be on call for potential short-term consultancy assignments generated from the Operations teams. Each assignment will be given a specific number of hours and can be conducted remotely. Responsibilities:
  • Edit (technical and copy edit) and format technical reports and other documents (e.g., presentations; briefing notes; training materials; literature reviews; and monthly, quarterly, and final reports), with emphasis on the following:

  • Ensuring correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure in compliance with MSI, client, and other required standards.

  • Identifying and correcting repetitious phrasing, technical and/or statistical inconsistencies, word choices that make passages ambiguous or unclear, and verbosity across sections of long documents.

  • Ensuring consistency of narrative voice both within and across project deliverables.

  • Ensuring clarity and soundness of logic and arguments and ensuring that data support findings, findings support conclusions, and recommendations connect to findings and conclusions.

  • Ensuring that deliverables are written and visually presented in a way that suits their target audience and that uses visual materials such as graphics, headings, textboxes, tables, figures, and photographs appropriately.

  • Developing effective infographics, slide decks, figures, graphs, and other visual materials to convey key messages successfully and concisely, working closely with technical team members to ensure they capture the core messages.

  • Reviewing project deliverables against provided checklists and standards for style and quality and suggesting revisions to comply with those standards.

  • Ensuring that all reports to be made publicly available are compliant with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.

  • Coordinating with managing editor and project managers on editorial schedule and guidelines.

  • Providing feedback and communicating with subject matter experts and other team members on substantive edits.

  • Conducting additional research and Analysis tasks as requested and availability permits.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of three years of editing experience required.

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, technical writing, communications, or related field required; master's degree preferred.

  • Superior written and Oral Communication skills.

  • Some professional experience in international development a plus.

  • Excellent Project Management and multitasking skills with ability to meet deadlines a must.

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English.

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) products.

  • Understanding of Section 508 compliance requirements for U.S. Government reports preferred.

  • Graphic Design experience preferred.

  • Familiarity with Chicago and Associated Press styles.

  • Familiarity with USAID terminology and MSI's technical areas a plus.
