WRI India has the capacity to convene key stakeholders, and forge strategic partnerships with governments, business, foundations, Civil Society Organizations, institutes and NGOs, to scale-up solutions that can bring game-changing results for the sustainable management of natural resources in India. Position Overview: WRI India is seeking a Senior Associate (SA) to join the Climate Resilience Practice (CRP) team in India. The SA will support the vision of CRP to help governments, civil society and the local communities to build a more resilient and sustainable development pathway. WRI’s CRP team engages in a diverse body of work. The current projects build on a foundation of almost 10 years of work on Climate Change adaptation. CRP has developed path-setting Knowledge Products to assess national institutional capacity and support civil society to enhance resilience efforts at the scale required. This position is a unique opportunity for those wishing to be at the forefront of cutting-edge research and implementation in the field of resilience, Climate Finance, institutional Capacity Building and nature-based solutions to tackle the threats posed by climate change. The SA will join a team of highly motivated individuals at CRP and the WRI Sustainable Finance Centre, and work closely with key government stakeholders to produce quality research and output that can help influence decision making and mainstream climate resilience and finance. This is a two-year full-time position (October 2020 – 2022) with the possibility for extension beyond the project period depending on the funding situation. Key Responsibilities: The SA’s main areas of responsibility will include the following:
  • Undertake rigorous qualitative and quantitative analysis and evaluation of sectoral climate policies and climate adaptation finance at the national and sub-national level.

  • Work with the CRP team to produce knowledge products, training manuals and research output to mainstream climate resilience and climate finance into Development Planning.

  • Interact with policy makers, sectoral leads and other key stakeholders on a regular basis to conduct joint analysis and communicate research findings effectively.

  • Contribute novel concepts and ideas to develop CRP’s portfolio on peri-urban resilience and nature-based solutions.

  • Provide support to other CRP projects as and when required.

  • Liaise with governmental and non-governmental stakeholders as well as other key identified partners.

  • Coordinate state level training program activities and webinars.

  • Conduct periodic and regular follow-ups in the target states.

  • Extend help in planning, budgeting and monitoring of the project activities.

  • Coordinate project related meetings, workshops, conferences and other dissemination activities.

  • Work with other CRP lead, team members and WRI India Development team to create new project concept ideas and proposals and build CRP’s portfolio. He /she would help promote CRP’s work with donor community to secure funding for the program.

Job Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Development/Climate Change/Environment/Economics/ Public Policy.

  • Minimum 7-8 years of relevant fulltime work experience.

  • Expert knowledge of national and international climate change and adaptation / resilience landscape.

  • Experience with the international development and climate policy context, particularly global/national climate finance; nature-based solutions and rural, urban/peri-urban resilience domains.

  • Familiarity with international climate negotiations and national adaptation plans and existing adaptation platforms and networks

  • Ability to undertake complex quantitative and qualitative analysis of large data sets

  • Willingness to travel for work to different states in India on a regular basis and on short notice

  • Ability to work independently and shoulder responsibility

  • An insightful, independent, analytical mind with a passion for environmental issues.

  • Fluency in English, Hindi and preferably in other Indian languages

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Good track record in research and peer reviewed publications

  • Field experience in implementing resilience/adaptation projects in developing country contexts.

  • Considerable experience in writing reports, communication materials, meeting summaries, workshop proceedings, training manuals, etc.,

  • Prior experience in engaging and interacting with governmental agencies, and networking with other key stakeholders from the environmental and developmental space.

  • Familiarity with key technical climate change issues and trends.

  • Good project management capabilities with skills in budget and planning.

  • Strong outreach and Business Development capabilities - speaking and writing to business and donor audiences; proven capabilities to negotiate with investors, companies, donors, and decision-makers.
