  2021 IDB Remote Winter Intern | Housing and Urban Development Department  Background of this search: Housing and Urban Development Department is looking for an active master's degree or PhD student; OR recent graduate from a graduate program with a background in sustainable urban development, urban heritage revitalization to be hired as a Remote Winter Intern under Products and External Services Consultant (PEC) modality. The team’s mission: The Housing and Urban Development Division (CSD/HUD) of the Inter-American Development Bank works on 6 thematic lines to contribute to the sustainable development of cities in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), namely; (i) Metropolitan Governance (ii) Smart Cities; (iii) Housing and neighborhood improvement; (iv) urban heritage (v) urban economy and financing and; (vi) Urban demography. This consultancy is part of the fourth area of work: urban heritage. Within the framework of the IDB's work, urban heritage is a set of inherited material and immaterial, monumental and smaller-scale assets and expressions, grouped into a city or settlement, that have a common history, traditions and identity, and are of recognizable patrimonial value, either by international organizations or by local and national legislatures, to be enjoyed by future generations. Urban heritage, therefore, addresses intergenerational equity in both environmental and socio-economic terms. In environmental terms, it promotes resilient heritage in eco-efficient cities with the capacity to adapt and recover from unusual events / shocks. In terms of socioeconomics, it promotes incentives for sustainable investment in local heritage, and fosters unlimited local Economic Development, but especially articulated with sustainable tourism and the promotion of creative cultural industries. Additionally, it promotes the inclusion of diverse population groups, especially vulnerable communities, and tends to the permanence of residents in said patrimonial sectors. Finally, it makes efforts towards effective and efficient governance, through a joint vision between public, private and civil society actors, that allow collaborative work. What you will do: You will support the urban heritage team in the development of methodological instruments for the effective implementation of the Living Heritage Program. The program’s current implementation exercises have identified the need for more effective methodologies for the identifying, safeguarding and valorization of intangible cultural heritage in LAC cities. As such, the urban heritage team is currently in the process of developing the methodological instruments and processes that tap such needs, permitting the effective Mapping of intangible cultural heritage (needs and potential) to contribute to sustainable, equitable and resilient cities in the region. The urban heritage intern will join the team in these efforts, contributing with specific and valuable technical inputs. You will have to do the following tasks:
  1. Develop a review about public policy instruments, initiatives and programs both in LAC and other parts of the world, geared to the identification, safeguarding and valorization of intangible cultural heritage and their relation to urban development.;

  2. Identify and characterize LAC cities that have adopted specific public policies, programs and/or initiatives, identifying the specfic context of their implementation (urban, socioeconomic, cultural);

  3. Propose specific methodological instruments/guidelines for the identification, safeguarding and valorization of intangible cultural heritage relevant to the LAC context and for the Living Heritage Program.

  4. Provide research assistance to support other departamental activities and projects, if needed.

Deliverables and Payments timeline: Deliverable 1: Report summarizing the state of art of safeguarding and valorization of intangible cultural heritage.   Deliverable 2: Report profiling LAC cities adopting specific public policies, programs and/or initiatives linked to Intangible cultural heritage in urban contexts. Deliverable 3: Report write up of findings and recommendations methodological instruments/guidelines for the identification, safeguarding and valorization of intangible cultural heritage for Living Heritage Program. The payment schedule will be as following: 25% on January 30, 25% on February 15, 25% on February 28, and 25% on March 15, 2021. What you will need:
  • Education: Active master's degree or Ph.D. student or recent graduate from a graduate program (maximum of 1 year after graduation date) in urban planning, urban development, architecture, cultural heritage planning/management in an accredited university.

  • Experience: Minimum two years of experience.

  • Languages: Be proficient in English and Spanish preferably with a working knowledge of one of the Bank’s additional official languages (e.g. Portuguese, or French).

  • Soft Skills: Self-management, flexibility, dependability, relationship building, results-driven, with strong communication skills.

  • Technical skills: versed in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, CRM- Salesforce

Remote Internship under PEC modality Requirements To be part of our Remote Internship you will need to comply with all the following requirements:
  • Be a national of any IDB member country.

  • Be minimum 23 years of age as of the starting date of the remote winter internship.

  • Be an active master’s degree or Ph.D. student; OR be a recent graduate (up to 1-year after graduation) from a graduate level program in an accredited university.

  • Not be former staff member, Complementary Workforce (“CW”), contractors for the Corporation or the Bank or have previously provided services to the Corporation or the Bank through a contractor or under any other contractual modality.

  • Not have family members (up to fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB or IDB Invest.

  • Have access to Internet connection.
