Job Description

The Statistics Department (STA) of the IMF, and the IMF’s Central America, Panama and Dominican Republic Technical Assistance Center (CAPTAC-DR), are looking for a qualified candidate to fill a Real Sector Statistics Advisor position based in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The Advisor will undertake technical assistance missions, training, and manage statistical Capacity Building programs in the countries covered by CAPTAC-DR – Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Panama. The Advisor’s initial appointment would be for a period of one year with the possibility for extension up to three years, contingent on performance, ongoing budget/business need and management approval. The Advisor will provide and oversee Capacity Development support in real sector statistics to the countries covered by CAPTAC-DR. These areas of work, which are included in the annual work plans endorsed by CAPTAC-DR Steering Committee, include: (i) to manage support on statistical capacity building in national accounts, price indices and other real sector statistics, including to monitor SDGs progress; (ii) to facilitate activities carried out by, and promote interaction of, regional and government agencies in the development of such macroeconomic statistics; and (iii) to coordinate capacity development activities with the relevant IMF Departments and, where appropriate, with other international institutions and bilateral agencies involved in capacity development in statistics. He/she will work under the general direction of the Coordinator of CAPTAC-DR and the technical direction of STA at IMF headquarters. He/she should expect to travel extensively within the region. The Advisor will undertake technical assistance missions and provide training primarily in national accounts and price statistics but also in other areas of real sector statistics if needed. He/she will also be responsible for managing and backstopping missions by short-term experts, ensuring that the appropriate mission documentation is produced following STA’s guidelines, and will contribute to the preparation of the annual report for the Steering Committee.


The successful candidate must have a university degree in a relevant discipline, an excellent knowledge and experience in compiling price statistics and national accounts. A good knowledge and experience in other macroeconomic statistics, particularly balance of payments, government finance statistics and monetary and financial statistics, is desirable. The candidate should have strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as a good command of the English language. Ability to coordinate capacity development support with the relevant IMF Departments, field experts, and with other international institutions and bilateral agencies is essential.
