OVERVIEW Post Number : IOC/PA/001 Grade : P-2 Parent Sector : Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Duty Station: Paris Job Family: Natural Sciences Type of contract : Project Appointment Duration of contract : 1 year Recruitment open to : Internal and external candidates Application Deadline (Midnight Paris Time) : 20-JUI-2020 UNESCO Core Values: Commitment to the Organization, Integrity, Respect for Diversity, Professionalism Duraction of Contract: One (1) year with the possibility of an extension subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds - Partial time (75%) OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST This position is located in the Ocean Science Section of the IOC headquarters at UNESCO in Paris and reports to the Head of the Ocean Science Section (OSS). Under the overall supervision of the Executive Secretary of IOC and the direct supervision of the Head of the Ocean Science Section, the incumbent will work in a collaborative team environment and will be responsible to undertake the following tasks and achieve the following objectives: Coordination
  • Support the IOC contribution to coordination of the International Partnership for Blue Carbon, which is currently provided by the Government of Australia, Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment in managing meetings with IPBC Partners and providing advice on strategic directions of the Partnership.

Events management
  • Be responsible of the oversight, coordination, preparations, promotion and Logistics for the IPBC.

Communication and Capacity Development
  • Engage with IPBC Partners on topics, needs and opportunities for sharing knowledge and collaboration;

  • Prepare communication products and collating existing guidance materials, for disseminating via website, communication channels and social media;

  • Develop, coordinate and implement knowledge exchange meetings and Capacity Building activities.

IPBC and the Blue Carbon Initiative
  • Liaise and coordinate on substantive matters related to blue carbon with the IOC blue carbon team in the context of IOC’s participation in the in the Blue Carbon Initiative.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education
  • Advanced University degree (Master’s or equivalent) in ocean or environmental science or management.

Professional experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in ocean or environmental science or in a science communication and Project Management role.

  • At least 1 year of professional experience working at the international level.

  • Proven experience in coordination of activities involving multiple partners.

  • Proven experience in planning, implementation and evaluation of science projects/programmes.

Skills and Competencies
  • Excellent communication skills in coordination of activities involving multiple partners.

  • Excellent writing capabilities and ability to prepare briefings and reports and write for various audiences.

  • Ablility to meet project and organizational performance plans within agreed budgets and timescales.

  • Ability to work effectively within a multi‐cultural environment and to work effectively in team environment to achieve organizational goals with limited supervision.

  • Good knowledge of existing international activities, projects and programmes on blue carbon.

  • Good computer skills in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Internet, GIS and Outlook.

  • Excellent knowledge of English (spoken and written) and good knowlegde of French.

  • PhD in ocean or environmental science or management.

  • Training in communication.
