Job Description

Background Information - Job-specific UNDP’s Global Programme on Nature for Development brings together three different initiatives – the Equator Initiative, the New York Declaration on Forests Global Platform, and the National Biodiversity Initiative under one program in order to identify, foster, showcase and celebrate nature-based solutions that help achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at local, national, and international levels. The work of the Global Programme on Nature for Development contributes to UNDP's Strategic Plan 2018-2021 by charting sustainable development pathways through the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of biodiversity and ecosystems; and by promoting inclusive and effective democratic governance in the area of natural resources. The Global Programme on Nature for Development also curates ‘nature-based solutions,’ for climate mitigation and adaptation, including spatial datasets with information on forests, mangroves, wetlands, carbon and other related information. In addition, the project engages in knowledge sharing about nature-based solutions and has an extensive distance-learning program. It also focuses on advocacy efforts to improve the implementation and uptake of nature-based solutions to achieve sustainable development. Functional Responsibilities
  • Develop national guidance briefs on ‘Nature Based Solutions’ to climate mitigation and adaptation

  • Review national policies and plans related to biodiversity, climate, forests, and nature-based development

  • Identify and fill key gaps in policy data through desk reviews

  • Develop and maintain online information systems to enable collaborative working arrangements with others

  • Review Nationally Determined Contributions and identify opportunities to expand nature-based solutions in both mitigation and adaptation

  • Prepare policy briefing on opportunities for scaling up nature-based solutions for both mitigation and adaptation

  • Share briefings with key stakeholders, revise and update as required

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education
  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communications, business or public Administration, finance, accounting, law, social sciences or related area, preferably with a specialization in environment.

Work Experience
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental issues, including forests, green energy, Climate Change, planning

  • Experience with reviewing and analyzing national plans and policies

  • Experience with analyzing, curating and presenting spatial analyses

  • Experience developing and synthesizing policy briefs on a variety of environmental issues

  • Experience communicating with national focal points on policy issues

Language
  • Fluency and excellent writing ability in English is required.

  • Fluency and excellent writing ability in Spanish and/or French is an asset
