Job Description

IDB Lab provides financing and support to private sector driven projects or enterprises that advance innovative approaches, and test new models or technologies with the potential to address social, economic, and environmental development problems affecting vulnerable populations in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Investment Unit (INV) at IDB Lab is the unit responsible to originate and manage the portfolio of reimbursable operations. For over 25 years, IDB Lab has been a pioneer in developing the early-stage innovation ecosystem, as well as in supporting initiatives to advance new business models –with potential for scalability— that facilitate inclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region. A key means to advance these goals has been the use of a range of reimbursable financing instruments at its disposal, notably direct investments in companies showing innovative models, and indirect investments through venture capital (VC) funds. IDB Lab has the largest portfolio of early-stage and innovative companies (300+), including the investment in over 55+ venture capital funds as Limited Partner, and an extensive portfolio of loans. IDB Lab is looking for an Operations Consultant, focused on its Investment Unit, to provide operational management of the financial project cycle and funnel of investment opportunities to be appraised in each phase of its approval process, in close cooperation with colleagues and units of IDB Lab. He/she would need to handle multiple tasks, be proactive and able to act independently but also possess the judgement required to know when to consult. He/she would need to be diplomatic and engaged, ambitious, very hard-working, and well-organized. Given IDB Lab’s mission, we are looking for someone who is passionate about using technology as a means to provide services to internal clientele in a way never imagined before. What you’ll do:
  • Manage INV’s project cycle throughout the funnel of appraisal and approval, from origination of opportunities to deployment of first disbursements, assuring operational targets are met, and closely coordinating with other IDB Lab operative unit (Discovery), assuring the operative program of IDB Lab is on track in terms of number, volume and breakdown of projects.

  • Work closely with IDB Lab’s Chief Investment Officer, and INV colleagues to proactively assist in the monitoring and management of the Unit’s financial operations.

  • Support different project teams in the workflow related to operational documents, which may include: participate in drafting, proofreading, and processing operational documents, including Results Matrices, budget, iDELTA, Environmental Safeguard Screening and Classification Forms, Environmental and Social Strategies (ESS), Convergence system, etc. before their submission to the different committees through the project cycle.

  • Participate in project teams to Design, approve, and implement IDB Lab equities and loans and other instruments.

  • Review project reports for loans and equities’ in accordance with Bank’s policies, guidelines, and procedures.

  • Establish and monitor calendar for the preparation of operations, ensuring teams understand their obligations and the relevant milestones for its final approval.

  • Provide guidance to the team in HQ and Country Offices on the preparation, scheduling, and processing of Bank operations.

  • Prepare memos and other communications required for document processing and distribution (example aide memoires).

  • As assigned, maintain and update operation and mission related activities within Bank Systems.

  • Coordinates official travel, telephone/video conferences, staff meetings and meetings with internal and outside guests.

  • Attend project operational review meetings and prepare minutes if needed.

  • Publish approved documents in the Bank’s Internet website, as regulated by policy OP-102 and document GN-1831-36.

  • Have knowledge of regulations and procedures of the Bank to effectively perform each of the processes under responsibility.

  • Assists in the preparation of abstracts, Donors Memorandums and give support to the team to apply products requirements and procedures to comply with institutional guidelines, and liaison with IDB Labs communications team.

What you’ll need:
  • Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries

  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB Group.

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in areas related to business Administration, economics, finance, Latin America regional studies as well as graduates in other fields such as anthropology, engineering, Computer Science or liberal arts who have taken some business courses.

  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience

  • Language: Proficiency in English and Spanish, both oral and written.

Core and Technical Competencies:
  • Project management and attention to detail, excellent skills in managing business processes with organization and method

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks is a must

  • Excellent excel and data organization skills

  • Great interpersonal skills both with colleagues and clients, highly collaborative and great communication skills

  • Basic understanding and passion for disruptive technologies and the venture capital sector, excellent organizational and project assistance skills, web savvy

  • Understanding and familiarity with IDB tools and systems is a plus
