Job Description

  This position is located within the United Nations Investigative Team for Accountability of Da'esh / ISIL (UNITAD) backstopping office and will be based in New York. UNITAD was established by the Secretary-General pursuant to Security Council resolution 2379 (2017), according to which it is mandated to support domestic efforts to hold ISIL (Da'esh) accountable by collecting, preserving and storing evidence in Iraq of acts that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed by the terrorist group ISIL (Da'esh) in Iraq. The unpaid internship is anticipated to be for three to six months. Intern works five days per week (35 hours). Responsibilities Legal Affairs Intern typically provides a combination of general office, legal, preparation of meetings and other administrative support. The incumbent may have responsibilities which include, but are not limited to: • Researches and compiles legal materials for use in the preparation of legal opinions. Assists in the preparation of legal documents for electronic storage, access and circulation/publication, including document scanning and conversion. Under supervision, may review, summarize and index significant rulings, legal opinions, etc. Services committees or meetings, selects and compiles relevant background materials, assist in preparation of relevant documents, attends meetings and prepares minutes, as appropriate. • Drafts, edits, proofreads and finalizes for signature and/or processes a variety of correspondence and other communications. Sets up and maintains reference file/records (electronic and paper). Maintains and updates internal databases; generates a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from existing databases. • Schedules appointments/meetings, monitors deadlines. Logs in and tracks all incoming and outgoing correspondence. • Performs other ad hoc duties as assigned. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) in international or administrative law or related area; or (c) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation; (d) If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree in international or administrative law or related area. 2. Be computer literate in standard word processing and Software Applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar; Be proficient in standard office automation equipment scanner, printer, etc.). 3. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. 4. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Work Experience No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.
