Job Description

The positions are in the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General for Human Resources and in the Organizational Development Section. The internship is for three months with an opportunity for extension to six months, depending on the needs of the department. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work normally five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the Communications Officer in the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General for Human Resources, or a Staff Development Officer in the Organizational Development Section. Jointly, the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General for Human Resources and Organizational Development Section in the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC), of the United Nations in New York is currently looking for a Communications and Instructional Design intern who is interested in joining a very dynamic and international office that is mandated to provide human resources services across the global UN Secretariat, and to identify and respond to Organizational learning and development needs. Examples of daily tasks include to: - Research, compile, draft and edit basic information for use in the preparation and production of communications materials, often under tight deadlines. - Organize and analyze data related to current projects. - Monitor and analyze statistics related to websites and communications products. - Manage meeting agendas and draft meeting notes. - Participate in organizing and setting up for special events or focus groups. - Draft and prepare written documents for various purposes (e.g. meeting notes, background material, correspondence, reports, stories/articles etc.) - Assist in the implementation of various HR initiatives and related work. - Assist with drafting reports based on quantitative research and Analysis. - Knowledge of using social Media Platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. - Familiarity with and/or interest in taking and/or editingdigital photographs or videos. - Familiarity with graphic design or video editing tools (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Adobe Premiere Pro other graphic design programs or video editing tools) is a plus. - Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g. Power BI) is a plus. - Take on other special projects as assigned. Education Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) In addition to the following: • Be computer literate in standard Software Applications, in particular Microsoft Word and Excel; • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views; • Familiarity and interest with issues related to international relations and equal representation of women and gender mainstreaming. Work Experience Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, having a background in communications, instructional design, organizational development, human resources, data visualization (e.g. using Power BI), industrial/organisational/occupational psychology, and/or other relevant fields is desirable. Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is required. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.
