Division Summary Our Global Health Division harnesses advances in science and technology to save lives in poor countries. We focus on the health problems that have a major impact in developing countries but get too little attention and funding. Where proven tools exist, we support sustainable ways to improve their delivery. Where they don't, we invest in research and development of new interventions, such as vaccines, drugs, and diagnostics. Group Summary One major goal of new interventions is to improve maternal, newborn, and Child Survival and health outcomes. In 2018, the Global Health Division created the MNCH Discovery and Tools (MNCH D&T) team to target underlying vulnerabilities in order to help more mothers thrive – and in doing so, transferring resilience to their newborns and future generations. MNCH D&T focuses on pregnancy through the first two years of life and aims to optimize birth outcomes for mothers and babies, support thriving (robust physical and neurocognitive growth) in the community and optimize prevention and treatment of infection. Position Summary and Responsibilities This is a 16-month limited term employment role to help stand-up strategies and partnerships for two growth areas in our portfolio related to maternal drug development and digital devices and algorithms to stratify risk in pregnancy and labor. The Program Officer (PO) for Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health Discovery and Tools (MNCH D&T), will lead the development and implementation of the portfolio of investments aimed at improving pregnancy outcomes for mothers and newborns in low and middle-income country settings. This initiative is part of an internal framework that aims to develop new tools to target underlying vulnerabilities in pregnancy and early childhood in order to reduce morbidity and mortality of mothers and children. This role requires the ability to execute on a diverse portfolio of grants with a sense of urgency and thoughtfulness by bringing together key internal and external stakeholders. The PO will have responsibility for creating and supporting new efforts that involve outreach to established investigators in both high income and low/middle income settings a well as engagement with Biotechnology, medical device, pharmaceutical, and software application development companies.
  • Implement strategic approaches to address MNCH Discovery &Tools’ goals focused on pregnancy and peripartum period with a sense of purpose and urgency

  • Frame, structure and develop the key choices, data and Analysis needs, assumptions, risks and overall narrative for segments of our portfolio requiring strategic attention

  • Work across multiple teams to ensure integration of information across partners and products, both within the D&T team and across our partner teams

  • Create innovative approaches to advance capacity of partners; troubleshoot and problem solve with partners to ensure rapid progression of priorities

  • Facilitate and develop cross-partner relationships and provide overall project management to complex, multi-stakeholder projects

  • Provide execution support on key emerging initiatives related to COVID19 and the MNCH D&T portfolio

  • Represent key program-related external constituencies. This includes both formal and informal presentations such as making speeches, attending conferences and other meetings as necessary.

  • This role is responsible for high quality interactions and clear and consistent communications with grantees and partners, both internal and external, so that packages of interventions can be designed to improve maternal and child outcomes.

Reports to: Director, MNCH D&T Core Knowledge & Skills We are looking for people who enjoy the challenge of working on complex projects and collaboratively creating solutions that have the potential for transformational change. We seek an experienced leader with knowledge of clinical aspects of maternal health and health during pregnancy as well as experience working with innovative healthcare technologies and applications of Big Data and analytics. Education and Experience
  • MD in obstetrics and gynecology

  • Expertise in both academic and field-based research in maternal and perinatal health

  • Corporate experience with Medtech, biotech, or pharmaceutical industries

  • Management consulting or other strategy and corporate development expertise preferred

Additional Skills and Experience:
  • Demonstrated ability structure and manage a group through complex and ambiguous tasks

  • Strong quantitative skills, including comfort analyzing data and interpreting data with gaps and uncertainties

  • Demonstrated outstanding written and oral communication skills in positions requiring communications in a broad and diverse audience on a range of complex technical issues.

  • Experience in a role requiring collaboration as well as a demonstrated ability to work with flexibility, efficiency and diplomacy both individually, as part of a complex team effort and across multi-disciplinary boundaries; ability to work in a cooperative and collegial fashion.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully assemble, coordinate, and manage complex inter-group collaborations and partnerships, guiding such programs to meet programmatic and strategic goals.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across traditional disciplinary boundaries in a highly collaborative manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Senior Leadership and senior policy makers.
