Job Description

This position will work to support the operationalization of the Gen U Global breakthroughs and strengthen multi sector collaboration on innovative programmes to address the four thematic areas of Gen U. Leveraging on UNICEF's position as a partner of choice for children's rights among public and private actors on the continent. This will be done through working closely with young people as resource and programme partners. The position will also coordinate Gen U interventions in innovations and work closely with UNICEF Office of Innovation and other Board Members, Leaders and Champions. Under the supervision of the Senior Adviser Partnership and in close collaboration with the Senior Advisor Programmes the Innovation Manager will provide Coordination and operational leadership in the planning and implementation of Gen U Innovations globally. This partnership brings together leaders from governments, UN agencies, the private sector, academia, international and Civil Society Organizations, and young people. The partnership will identify, co-create, resource and scale-up innovative solutions to expand opportunity for young people. Good programmes will be matched with adequate financing and Technical Support; investors will find viable solutions to invest in and strong accountability mechanisms that provide adequate assurance of results and Financial Management; and young people will participate meaningfully in the co-creation of solutions, informing, advising and helping implement at every step of the way. Under the supervision of the Senior Adviser Partnership and in close collaboration with the Senior Advisor Programmes the Innovation Manager will provide coordination and operational leadership in the planning and implementation of Gen U Innovations globally The position will help strengthen the Gen U agenda on implementing innovative global breakthrough ideas and their implementation at country level. Summary of key functions/accountabilities:
  • Coordinate the development of business plans for selected breakthroughs and innovation areas.

  • Prep with different stakeholders, manage logistics and prepare content for the implementation of global and regional global breakthrough solutions summits.

  • Develop content for engagement with identified partners with specialized assets to create new products or models to resolve specific global breakthroughs in the seven priority areas

  • Gather, analyze and package intel to support the creation of strategic networks with implementer partners in different countries to accelerate joint learning and scale proven innovations.

  • Create a network of partners within GenU governance that work together to support GenU related innovation.

Innovation Strategy & Change Management
  • Provide strategic support for the development of Gen U strategy on innovation and coordinate a Gen U process to build consensus and align on a Vision, Strategy and Organization structure for innovations within Gen U

  • Work with relevant teams and divisions to coordinate establishment of goals and curate priorities of Gen U breakthroughs

  • Engage with stakeholders and young people to facilitate and create a shared understanding and buy-in among key stakeholders across partners, stakeholders, as well as with external partners on the global breakthroughs.

  •  Provide advice on the effective institutionalization of the innovation strategy within Gen U

Innovative investment opportunities
  • Network strengthen/establish new alliances and networks on innovation and innovative finance.

  • Engage with relevant external stakeholders and partners working on innovation and innovative finance.

  • Advise on and contribute to the Design and implementation of innovative finance deals or specific innovation initiatives;

  • Serve as the project lead on selected innovation initiatives and/or innovative finance deals as required.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
  • An advanced university degree (master's or higher) in one of the following fields is required: social sciences, international politics, participation, development or another relevant technical field.

  • A minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in communication, planning, office management and /or operations is required.

  • An in-depth understanding of, and experience working in, UNICEF or the UN is essential.

  • Programme country experience is required.

  • Experience in working with multilateral/bilateral partners is desirable, and private sector is required.

  • Strong capacity to work effectively in inter-divisional teams.

  • Strong capacity to distill and translate multifaceted and critical issues for organizational attention.

  • Strategic and global thinking, analytical ability and strong curiosity.

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Credible presence, strong presentation skills, and ability to communicate with senior leaders.

  • Flexible and able to multi-task; can work within fast environment while also driving towards clarity and solutions.

  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is considered as an asset.
