Description

The Research Department of the IMF has an opening for an Economist/Sr. Economist to work in the Commodities Unit. The contract duration would be two years, with a possibility of extension. The main responsibilities of the Commodities Unit are:
  • Provide an array of products within the Research Department (commodity market analysis, data provision and forecasts, conjunctural notes, analytical work, etc.);

  • Carry out analytic work to inform both bilateral and multilateral surveillance work;

  • Provide timely analysis and consultations to inform country desks’ growth forecasts and external sector analysis, deepening RES’s engagement with area departments; and

  • Provide information on primary commodity market developments, as well as a periodic report to help country desks assess their oil production forecasts.

The selected candidate will work under the general supervision of the Unit Chief and will have a sufficient depth of experience and variety of skills to participate, add value, and contribute to the operational, research, and policy work of the unit.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have an advanced degree in economics and should also have:
  • Proven expertise in the analysis of commodity markets and the macroeconomic implications of commodity price shocks;

  • The capability to undertake independently policy-oriented research on the commodity market;

  • A solid analytical background and strong econometric skills;

  • Demonstrated sound policy judgment and strong drafting and editing skills; and demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines

  • Proven expertise in agricultural economics with an emphasis on food markets and food security.
