About FHI 360’s Global Education, Engagement and Employment (G3E Business Unit) FHI 360’s Global Education, Engagement and Employment (G3E) Business Unit plays a leading and widely recognized global role in five technical areas, including Civil Society and Peacebuilding, Economic Participation, Global Connections (specializing in exchanges, scholarships Program Management, online learning, and sports and youth), Global Education, and Research and Evaluation. G3E staff currently implement over 70 projects in all regions of the world. G3E funders have been and are diverse, ranging from US Government agencies (e.g., USAID, US Department of State, Millennium Challenge Corporation) to multilaterals (e.g., UNICEF, UNESCO), foundations (e.g., Educate a Child Foundation), and the private sector (e.g., Hess, Kosmos-Trident, Global Impact Investing Network). G3E is seeking a dynamic Director of Business Development to oversee business development across all of our technical areas. Job Summary The Director of Business Development for the G3E Business Unit will be responsible for winning new business for the practice areas in G3E and guiding its departments to develop strategies for maintaining and continually growing strong and diversified portfolio. S/he will be responsible for managing and developing teams with the capacity to excel in all areas of the business development cycle – from identifying and prioritizing opportunities, conducting effective capture, and developing winning proposals. S/he will lead a team in coordinating G3E business opportunities, ensuring an active pipeline of bids in capture and preparation, managing market intelligence, and leading positioning activities. The Director will work closely with the G3E technical departments to make strategic decisions on investments in new business growth areas and to pursue specific funding opportunities and partnerships. S/he will work in collaboration with and leverage the resources of the Business Development and Diversification (BDD) department and other corporate stakeholders. The Director will work closely with the G3E leadership and the technical departments on all aspects of business development, ranging from strategic planning and positioning, the development of annual business plans, client and partner cultivation, the identification and prioritization of opportunities, ensuring effective capture efforts, and providing senior-level oversight of proposal development to ensure quality, compliance, and competitiveness. S/he will provide a key leadership role in ensuring each department is on track to achieve annual sales targets. The Director will provide senior-level leadership in the development, management and quality assurance of business development from capture through proposal submission. S/he will ensure that proposal processes are efficient, effective, well communicated and consistently implemented. The Director will also serve as G3E’s primary liaison to FHI 360’s central Business Development and Diversification department and other corporate stakeholders on business development-related matters and continual business development process improvements. S/he will also identify and address Capacity Development needs among G3E staff in relation to business development. The Director will develop an extensive network of partners and consultants that are relevant to the G3E practice areas and will cultivate relationships with non-USG donors, including private foundations and other government and multilateral donors. Performance in this position will be measured by the facilitation of contract and grant wins through strategic planning and positioning, client cultivation, capture and proposal development, effective capacity-building of G3E staff in business development; and the development of strong internal and external partnerships that facilitate new business wins. The ideal candidate will have some technical familiarity/experience with one or more of G3E’s technical areas. Accountabilities:
  • Serves as G3E’s primary representative to FHI 360’s central Business Development and Diversification unit and other business development committees and working groups;

  • Analyzes market intelligence related to G3E’s technical areas of interest and with technical department input, makes informed strategic recommendations for short-, medium- and long-term business development opportunities based on that intelligence;

  • Liaises with G3E leadership and technical departments on the articulation and periodic refinement of G3E’s overall business development strategy;

  • Directs annual business planning and sales target-setting exercises for G3E technical departments and the Business Unit overall;

  • Works collaboratively with technical departments and G3E leadership to proactively cultivate strategically important clients and partners;

  • Represents G3E externally at selected external events for purposes of business development;

  • Provides senior-level oversight of the capture and proposal development process to ensure compliance with organizational policies and processes and client requests and the overall competitiveness of G3E bids;

  • Provides continual input into business Development Policy, processes and tools improvement to ensure efficiency, clarity, and effectiveness;

  • Provides senior-level guidance to proposal teams on developing winning technical and cost strategies, differentiators, and teaming and recruitment approaches;

  • Cultivates an extended external network of clients, partners and potential partners, and senior technical personnel in G3E’s areas of focus;

  • For large priority bids, may serve as a capture manager or proposal Design lead as needed.

Applied Knowledge & Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of USAID and other funder’s strategies and the opportunities they present for G3E in the short-, medium- and long-term;

  • In-depth familiarity with and experience in one or more of the following international development practice areas is required: global education, civil society and peacebuilding, workforce strengthening, Economic Growth or international exchanges.

  • Thorough understanding of and experience with best practices in business development practices for USAID and other large funders in the international development arena;

  • Experience identifying, positioning for and securing business from corporations and/or foundations;

  • Track record for directing successful business and proposal development efforts to achieve sales targets, including strategic relationship-building and positioning;

  • Strong knowledge of business development concepts, practices and procedures and the ability to apply that knowledge;

  • Exceptional networking and client cultivation skills;

  • Advance analytical skills;

  • Expert knowledge of project/process management;

  • Excellent communication, diplomatic and negotiation skills;

  • Ability with intermediate to complex level of technology;

  • Ability to multi-task, meets deadlines, and accomplishes goals;

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English;

  • Minimum of Bachelor's Degree or International Equivalent in Business Administration, Human Development, Social Science or Related Field.

  • Master’s degree in business or human development from an accredited institution, or their international equivalent is preferred.

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years industry experience.

  • Preferred is at least 5 years in a leadership positions for business development, and at least 5 years working in one or more of the following development sectors: international exchanges, global education, Economic Development, governance and peacebuilding, civil society strengthening.

  • Experience in Program Management and one or more areas of human development.

  • International business development experience preferred.

  • Experience in the development field in resource scheduling, managing timelines, and leading team activities required.

  • Prior budget and management responsibility required.

  • Managing professional staff or comparable team management experience required.

  • Substantial consultative experience within a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).
